After more than 30 years in its current South Melbourne home, Factory Sound is preparing to close the doors on one of the most recognisable sites in Australia’s professional audio industry.
Located on York Street, the building has been home to Factory Sound in its current form for 32 years — a space that has grown alongside the business and the industry itself.
What makes this move significant isn’t just the time, but what the space has represented.

Originally operating as rehearsal rooms and recording spaces in the early ’90s, the site evolved into something far beyond a traditional retail store. Over the years, it has become a dedicated pro audio hub — a place where engineers, technicians, venue operators, and creatives come not just to purchase equipment, but to test ideas, solve problems, and build systems.
For many in the industry, Factory Sound has never felt like a typical shop. It’s been a meeting point — somewhere to learn, collaborate, and connect.
As the team prepares to move on, the coming weeks will see a major clearance sale and a series of content and activations reflecting on the history of the space and the people who have been part of it.
At the same time, the next chapter is already well underway.

Factory Sound’s new Port Melbourne location is set to open in the coming months, and it represents a significant step forward. The new space has been designed from the ground up to better support the way the industry works today — with expanded demonstration environments, improved facilities, and a stronger focus on client experience, collaboration, and events.
Everything will be bigger, more capable, and more refined — building on what Factory Sound has become known for, while pushing it further.
While the address may be changing, the intent remains the same: to provide a space where the industry can come together, experiment, and create.
After 30+ years in South Melbourne, Factory Sound is moving into its next phase.
