Audio-Technica Debuts New BP880R Contact Transducer

Audio-Technica has introduced the BP880R Contact Transducer, a specialized microphone designed to capture impacts and vibrations transmitted through surfaces and structures that’s built to meet IPX7 waterproof performance standards in applications such as sports broadcasting, film and television production, field recording, theater and more.

The BP880R uses a high-sensitivity piezoelectric sensor to detect physical vibrations and convert them into an audio signal. It makes it possible to record sounds such as a skate blade moving across ice, a skier traveling over a course, a swimmer interacting with a pool, or a hockey puck striking the goal.

The transducer has minimal sensitivity to airborne sound, helping production teams isolate these effects from surrounding ambience. The resulting signal can be blended with conventional microphone tracks to add detail and a greater sense of physical impact to broadcasts and productions.

Audio-Technica developed the BP880R in part through its experience providing audio support at sporting events. The company says the design is also suited to creative sound applications, including Foley and location recording. In theater and live production, it can be attached to stages, flooring, scenery and other structures to capture sounds that may be difficult to record with traditional microphones.

The phantom-powered unit combines its piezoelectric sensor with an internal preamplifier, allowing it to deliver a clear signal over long cable runs. A fixed 20-meter (65.6-foot) waterproof cable terminates in an XLR-M connector and provides a low-impedance, balanced output.

The BP880R uses a low-profile, dezincification-resistant brass housing with a protective coating intended to withstand corrosion from chlorinated water. Its construction allows it to be used in demanding environments, including underwater or in ice, as well as buried underground, installed in flooring, or attached to structures such as foul poles and other equipment around a playing field. Mounting options include four through-holes for screws, nuts or zip ties, along with a 1/4-inch threaded hole for single-screw installation.
