White Bay Power Station has hosted parties before… But for SANDBOX, we wanted to show what the Boiler House could become with a production designed around its architecture.
Integratd led technical design and production management, bringing lighting, audio and creative together to turn the space into a hard techno nightclub.
The lighting design followed the boiler’s steelwork, extending it into a multi-layered rig. Rather than spending the night shooting beams into the crowd, we tucked strobes and molefays into the boiler’s layers and along the 30-metre-high catwalks beside the coal hoppers. That height sets White Bay apart, and we wanted people to see all of it. The scale and intensity gave the room a distinctly different presence from previous events.
To keep the design tidy, we built it around two main fixture types: ACME Pixel lines and our LED Molefays, with Claypaky Sharpy beams adding movement over the audience. The Pixel lines were the hero of this design, giving us plenty of flexibility without cluttering the steelwork with bulky lights. The rig needed to look good on camera and in the room, whether it was on or off.
Audio took several design revisions to balance impact and clarity in a reflective room. We settled on 16 flown L-Acoustics A15s in a four-point rig, eight KS28 subs across the stage front, stage deck fills and Kara II for the upstairs VIP mezzanine. Aiming, timing and tuning kept the sound focused on the crowd.
A 20-metre-high, two-metre-wide ROE Vanish LED screen—our tallest build yet—tied the lighting levels together and emphasised the Boiler House’s vertical scale. Its transparency kept the boiler visible as content faded to black.
The Layher scaffold deck extended under and around the boiler to create space for the VIP area, working between walls, beams, columns and concrete bases. Heritage protection guided every decision, from planning clearances through to build and removal.
