Review: GLP Dot Fixtures

By James Simpson

Small and mighty. That’s how I think of the Dot range from GLP. When I review products, I’m quite used to a pallet turning up at my house, or at least a flightcase. A neat little box containing three rather adorable fixtures was a welcome change, and made me remark like an old man: ‘Haven’t we come a long way since the birdie?’

With only one moving part – a manual zoom – it looked as though this was going to be a short but sweet review. Then I read that I could control the whole system from
an app, and suddenly my job became much bigger and a lot more fun. There is plenty to say about GLP’s engineering in the Dot range, but this is my first time
using the company’s app, and it deserves a review of its own.

So, what was actually in the box? Three separate fixtures, one driver and a collection of four-pin XLR cables. The Dot range consists of birdie-sized luminaires
in compact IP65 bodies. They feel built to survive the rigours of an outdoor environment, with enough weight and solidity to suggest they will continue
working after the real world has done its best to interfere. The three fixtures I had were all slightly different, though, and need to be treated one at a time.
