1000 gigs to play in NSW this November!

Posted on Tuesday, June 16th, 2020

A new music event will bring 1,000 COVID-safe gigs to Sydney and regional NSW in November, giving Australian artists a welcome boost and turbocharging live music venues across the state. Great Southern Nights is an NSW Government initiative delivered by its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW in partnership with the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) to support the recovery of the live music, entertainment and hospitality industries. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the gigs would be a welcome antidote to the challenges presented by COVID-19, bushfires and the prolonged drought.

“This celebration of outstanding Australian artists and incredible live music venues across NSW gives us all something to look forward to, from event-goers to industry,” Minister Ayres said. “We’ll be able to get out and see Sydney and regional NSW come to life with some of Australia’s top acts including Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and Tones and I alongside emerging artists in unexpected places.

“We’re inviting venues across NSW, from the bush to the city, to nominate to be involved in this exciting new event.

“With the NSW Government’s 24-hour economy strategy set to reinvigorate Sydney’s nightlife, Great Southern Nights will be a big step forward for our state’s live music and hospitality community that has been hit hard in recent times.”

Among the 20 headline acts to play across the music event are (in alphabetical order):

• Jimmy Barnes • Birds of Tokyo • Missy Higgins • The Jungle Giants • Paul Kelly • Thelma Plum • The Presets • Amy Shark • Tash Sultana • The Teskey Brothers • Tones and I • The Veronicas

Established and emerging local Australian artists will present 1,000 gigs, curated by ARIA and an industry advisory committee across a multitude of venues around NSW. Great Southern Nights will culminate with Australia’s premier music industry event, the ARIA Awards, in Sydney.

“We’re proud to create this opportunity for Australian musicians, and help bring back the live music scene right across NSW,” ARIA chief executive officer Dan Rosen said. “Live music events bring visitors, culture and excitement to communities. This initiative will provide an invaluable boost for the artists, crew, venues and music community that make gigs happen.”

Industry research by Music NSW indicates that live music generates approximately $3.6 billion and 23,000 jobs for the NSW economy. All music events will be programmed in line with current Government health advice regarding physical distancing and venue capacity of public gatherings. Venues and artists are invited to submit an expression of interest to be involved in Great Southern Nights – registrations open at http://www.greatsouthernnights.com.au

L-Acoustics Launches Online Education Platform

Posted on Monday, June 15th, 2020

As many countries slowly lift confinement restrictions, L-Acoustics will re-open in-person education programs this month. Simultaneously, to complement in-person training and to offer the greatest flexibility to users, L-Acoustics is pre-launching a new Online Education Platform.

The first program on the platform is a complete, but remote, version of its renowned System Fundamentals training, a prerequisite for all other L-Acoustics training modules. In 2019, L-Acoustics hosted training courses in 60 countries, completing 670 training days and awarding 6,000 certificates. Of these, 240 training days and 2,400 certificates were for the Systems Fundamentals course.

“This education platform will foster the creation of a learning community where participants can share questions and develop a useful network of L-Acoustics users, as well as benefitting from the expertise of the instructors and the other trainees,” explained Etienne Corteel, Director of Education & Scientific Outreach.

The online Systems Fundamentals course provides an overview of what an L-Acoustics system is, including electronics, loudspeakers and software, and puts them into the perspective of a global project workflow. The course is structured around the full, in-person training, and grants participants the exact same industry-recognised certification.

The course is personalised, beginning with a virtual class, followed by several days where participants complete e-learning courses and practical exercises on Soundvision and LA Network Manager. During this week, participants access an online community room to exchange with classmates or pose questions to the instructor. A second virtual classroom closes out the program, with the trainer correcting the exercises submitted by students, followed by tips and feedback.

“The online System Fundamentals course is a great opportunity for us to try new collaborative and interactive learning methods for the L-Acoustics Education program,” explained François Montignies, Head of Education Programs at L-Acoustics. “It allows us to continue offering the same level of industry-leading training to the widest possible audience, and to meet the evolving needs of our users.”

Corteel added: “Our strictly in-person approach will evolve towards a blended approach, where the in-person courses remain at the core of the offering, complemented with additional online activities to reinforce the learning experience,”

Beginning in the week of 22 June 2020, in-person training will recommence at the company’s Marcoussis, France and Westlake Village, California headquarters, as well as at partner locations where local legislation permits. All in-person classes will follow a strict sanitary protocol to ensure the safety of instructors and participants, including adjustments to group size and agenda as well as supplying masks and hyroalcoholic gel for all participants.

Registration for both onlne and in-person trainings is accessible on the L-Acoustics website: www.l-acoustics.com/en/training/registration/

L-Acoustics in an official AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) Renewal Unit (RU) Provider. Engineers who complete L-Acoustics Systems Fundamentals either online or in person, will receive 3.5 CTS Renewal Units (RU).L-Acoustics announces the launch of an Online Education Platform.

Welcome to The Roadie Show

Posted on Friday, June 12th, 2020

James ‘Oysters’ Kilpatrick is one of Australia’s most experienced FOH engineers and has mixed for a who’s who of Australian music. Like most of us, the Covid-19 pandemic left him suddenly with no work so he retreated into his mixing studio The Cave, and sulked.

Fast forward a short while and, inspired by beer and good mates, Oysters decided to put all his gear, knowledge and invaluable contacts to good use creating The Roadie Show. Along with key contributors Barry Brody, Alex Saad and Christian McBride, the team behind The Roadie Show have a combined history of more than one hundred years of stage, screen and touring experience in the live music business.

“The Roadie Show aims to provide fun-filled and creative opportunities to keep going and stay busy in this fragile climate of uncertainty,” commented Oysters. “Essentially, it brings long-time mates, roadies and musicians together with a Plan B to keep a small part of the once-thriving global entertainment industry alive.”

Combining fun, some zany hosts, live music and interviews, you can expect to see risqué, absurdity, obscurity and maybe one or two talented roadies being comically creative.

“This project is guaranteed to keep you entertained and amazed, all whilst promoting positive fun supporting an outlet for the lesser-known creativity of our Roadies,” added host Christian McBride. “It’s important to note that this concept started when we were not allowed to meet in a room with not even four people so, as of yet, we have not been able to deliver this with a true diversity of participants that is the Australian production community. As we move on, we want to be much more inclusive including speaking to more women and incorporating other regions. That’s an important point as I think we will get slammed for Episode 1 being Melbourne-centric and having no women involved. It even makes me want to vomit!”

Naturally, the technical stakes are high with bands playing live from Orange Studios Moorabbin which is used as a sound stage. Oysters mixes the band using a 32 channel input Pro Tools rigs with Aurora Lynx interfaces, Antelope Super Clock, Calrec 28ch analogue console with numerous analogue outboard options and a small-format monitor rig running Shure IEM packs and headphones supplied by JPJ Audio.

Alex Saad looks after the lighting using LED uplights and controllers supplied by Phaseshift Productions, Chauvet Freedom i-pix wireless or battery LEDs and a Jands Stage CL console plus Jands 4PAK-D portable dimmers.

It’s a high definition, multi-camera shoot utilizing Panasonic remote head cameras and controllers, Marshall POV cameras, an ENG camera, Ross vision mixer, Pix video recorder, DTS Scena LED 80 tungsten fresnels ….. and of course every Roadie’s favourite, heaps of cable!

Episode 1 features music by Ned Branchi, amongst others, an interview with legendary Australian Roadie Howard Freeman, a cameo by Larry Ponting, jokes, general shenanigans and even Minibikes.

The team behind The Roadie Show need broadcast partners and sponsors to help them give crew and artists employment in The Cave, and beyond, combat boredom and to maintain strong mental health. If you can help, please contact Barry Brody barrybrody@me.com

GLP launches 10 Out Of 10

Posted on Tuesday, June 9th, 2020

GLP is launching a new series of short-form, fun and informative interview videos with lighting designers from around the industry.

The series will see videos released on a weekly basis with different designers facing the same 10 questions. Covering their career starts, their career highs and some of the moments they would rather forget. Partly informative, partly inspirational, and partly irreverent and amusing, the interviews bring a little bit of everything to the viewer.

Episodes will be published every Wednesday on GLP’s YouTube Channel @glpimpression, and through their various social media feeds.

With guests such as storied concert touring designer, Ethan Weber; Broadway and West End award-winning designer Neil Austin; the legendary Steven Cohen; NBC Universal’s Fred Bock and many more fascinating characters, the series is designed to bring a little bit of something for everyone. Encore announces introduction of MeetSAFE

Posted on Thursday, June 4th, 2020

Encore has announced the introduction of MeetSAFE, a set of guidelines to help the live event industry safely adapt to the changing landscape for meetings and events. MeetSAFE was developed by PSAV and Encore’s Family of Companies in response to evolving customer needs. As the world begins to reopen from COVID-19 shutdown, Encore will be working with clients and venue partners to implement the guidelines to safely and responsibly host events.

Designed to inspire trust and confidence, the set of tools is focused on redesigning events to successfully deliver on the strategic goals of the meeting while defining new guidelines to minimise risk and promote health. Doing so safely, will be the first priority of all planning activities as the ability to conduct in-person meetings will be dependent on making people feel safe in any setting.

“Our industry has more to consider when planning live events in the future. While there has been an explosion of virtual events due to today’s environment, we know there will be a time when both hybrid and fully live meetings will return,” said Ben Erwin, President of PSAV.

“People feel a strong desire for face-to-face interactions, so we wanted to be proactive and offer guidance on how they can ensure important live meetings and events are productive, but also safe at the same time.”

The MeetSAFE guidelines were developed with four key areas of focus in mind: event design, room layout / traffic flow, technology enhancements, and cleaning guidelines. With input from venue partners, event planners and leading industry associations, the new guidelines include a series of meeting formats, technology solutions, and other recommendations that outline paths around how the event industry could re-open during the early phases of recovery.

“The Events Industry Council applauds PSAV for its leadership through this effort to provide relevant guidance and tools to industry professionals,” commented Amy Calvert, CEO of the Events Industry Council.

“We are encouraged and inspired by the work we are seeing in all segments and regions to address today’s challenge and adapt for the future. The APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force is focused on curating and sharing accepted practices across the global events ecosystem and will include this tool in that work.”

The MeetSAFE guidelines were created in alignment with the hotel industry’s own safety and health guidelines and will be critical in preparing venues to safely host events as the economy reopens.

The 90-minute webinars go out across three time slots: 7.30am BST, 10.00am BST and 5.00pm BST.

“We’ve been delighted with the response so far,” said Dom Harter, managing director at Martin Audio. “With over 500 registrants to date, this is fast becoming an excellent opportunity for us to guide people through our portfolio and to help attendees find the right product for different applications and budgets.”

Get Creative And Win In The #ADJHouseParty Contest

Posted on Thursday, May 7th, 2020

As most of the world is practising social distancing to fight the coronavirus pandemic at the moment, staying in is the new going out! Whatever you’re doing to keep positive and #StayConnected ADJ wants to be a part of it. In our new #ADJHouseParty contest, we’re offering you the chance to win a pair of Focus Spot 2X moving heads + other fantastic prizes.

To enter the contest, all you have to do is put your ADJ lighting fixtures to use at home and post the photos or video on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter along with the hashtag #ADJHouseParty. What you do with them is entirely up to you! If you’re a lighting designer, you could set up a rig in your garage and program a time-coded light show. If you’re a DJ, you could use your fixtures to light up your next live-streamed set from your living room. If you want to show support for healthcare workers, you could use your lights to illuminate the outside of your house blue.

Whatever you do, if you want to win, you’ll need to use your imagination! We’ll be selecting the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners based on how good the photos/videos look as well as the creative use of ADJ products. The contest is open to anyone around the world and will run from now until the end of May and you can enter as many times as you like, just be sure to let us know what ADJ fixture(s) you have used in the description of your social media post(s).

Once the contest has closed at the end of May, the ADJ team will comb social media for every post that uses the #ADJHouseParty hashtag and choose three winners based on the creative use of ADJ fixtures and the aesthetic appeal of the photos/video. We’ll then exclusively announce the winners in a Facebook Live broadcast on Wednesday, June 3rd. Three winners will be selected who will receive the following prizes:

1st Place: 2 x ADJ Focus Spot 2X moving heads
2nd Place: ADJ Airstream Bridge DMX
3rd Place: ADJ Jolt 300

Don’t forget, if you want to win, try to make your entry as creative as possible. Good luck!
