Show Technology Enriches Griffith’s New Outdoor Stage

Groove & Graze Festival, Griffith’s newest one-day musical event, was held last month in Burley Griffin Community Gardens and utilised the council’s new outdoor stage.

Pristine Productions was the Festival Producer, with assistance from Griffith City Council, with a line-up featuring Reece Mastin and Mahalia Barnes & The Soulmates, as well as local performers.

“This was the first time we used the 12m x 7m stage complete with trussing, new lighting and PA system,” commented John Matkovic, Technical Operations Coordinator.

The lighting, provided by Pristine Productions, is a smorgasbord of Show Technology gear including 10 x ShowPRO R3 Wash, 8 x ShowPRO Pluto 350, 4 x Prolights ECL Cyclorama100, 8 x ShowPRO LED PAR Quad-18 and a ShowPRO Tracer LED follow spot.

“I approached Pristine with a basic lighting rig wish list including movers so once it is rigged, I don’t have to get back up there to focus,” explained John. “I also wanted everything to be LED.”

John reports that he has been impressed but the ShowPRO R3 Washes, saying that their ability to go down to a 4° spot and back out to a 32° flood is perfect for the stage.

“The rear truss is only four metres from the stage floor and the ShowPRO R3 Washes beautifully flood the whole stage area from that height,” he said. “I was also narrowing the beam down for a Sharpy effect throwing beams out across the park. Great light output, they’re quite impressive!

“The Pluto 350s certainly give us bang for buck and again, they have a great zoom range and can deliver complete gobo coverage of the stage floor plus they have a great light output too. I’ve actually pulled them out and used them in the theatre a couple of times!”

The Prolights ECL Cyclorama100s have only been used for effects or side lights so far as the backdrop for the outdoor stage is yet to be delivered.

“They are awesome as a cyc light, one of the best I’ve ever seen,” added John. “They came through the theatre on a show and I thought they were amazing, so now we have five units in the theatre to do the cyc lighting. They deliver a beautiful even spread, have great colours and nice dimming.

“As for the ShowPRO LED PAR Quad-18, they provide a standard, good flood and are nice and bright. We had some in the theatre for ten years and never had any dramas with them, they’re very robust.”

John says that the ShowPRO Tracer LED follow spot has nice dimming and is ideal for a 20-metre throw to the stage.
