Senior Lighting Technician

HOTA, Home of the Arts Precinct

This role will be based at HOTA, Home of the Arts. HOTA is an iconic Gold Coast destination where art, entertainment, culture and lifestyle meet. A place that locals love and visitors must-see. HOTA offers a diverse suite of venues and facilities, including a gallery, outdoor stage, indoor theatres and cinemas, function and events rooms, as well as a range of food and beverage venues including the HOTA Café, the rooftop Exhibitionist Bar and three hat Palette Restaurant.

At the heart of HOTA’s identity is a rich and diverse program: live music, theatre, dance, comedy, film, visual art exhibitions, children’s shows, community workshops, and festivals – all taking place across the array of venues.

 About the Role

The Senior Technician, Lighting plays a pivotal role in ensuring that all technical facilities and resources at HOTA consistently meet client and company expectations.

This position will oversee the day-to-day technical operations to ensure all lighting systems, equipment, and resources meet both client needs and organisational expectations, maintaining the highest operational standards and ensuring WH&S compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Technical Services Development & Improvement

  • Contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of technical services delivered across HOTA’s Performing and Visual Arts spaces, ensuring services meet the needs of theatrical, corporate, and visual arts events.
  • Assist the Technical Operations Manager and the Heads of Department in the creation and refinement of operational procedures related to the delivery of services in the performing and visual arts environments at HOTA.


Equipment & Operational Management

  • Provide detailed recommendations regarding immediate and long-term equipment upgrades, maintenance, and investment for the Technical Operations Manager and Heads of Lighting.
  • Ensure the effective operation of equipment and project execution under your remit, including fulfilling roles as an operator and installer when necessary.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of operational procedures, ensuring all equipment and processes comply with departmental standards and HOTA policies.


Gallery & Exhibition Support

  • Lead the coordination, installation, and programming of all technical elements used in exhibitions, special events, and theatrical performances at HOTA.
  • Assist with the maintenance of lighting equipment across gallery and HOTA spaces, ensuring all gear is in safe, working order.


Staff Management & Coordination

  • Coordinate the rostered staff responsible for the implementation and realisation of exhibitions, performances, and events.
  • Provide training for the Gallery and HOTA teams on specific equipment and exhibition-related technical skills as required.
  • Provide thorough and relevant inductions to casual technicians and contracted crew.


Creative & Technical Execution

  • Use both creative and technical lighting expertise in collaboration with clients and the technical department to schedule, budget, and create productions tailored to specific needs and expectations.
  • Operate lighting equipment for exhibitions, events, and theatrical performances, ensuring smooth delivery and adherence to safety and quality standards.


Technical Documentation & CAD Drawings

  • Create and adapt technical plans using CAD software for both internal and external parties, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Maintain accurate records related to the technical services, operations, and procedures, in line with HOTA’s business needs and industry best practices.


Administrative Support & Liaison

  • Support roster procedures for the Technical Services team, ensuring proper scheduling and resourcing of all necessary personnel.
  • Provide administrative assistance as assigned by the Technical Operations Manager, including maintaining documentation and tracking operational activities


What We’re Looking For

  • Lighting Systems Expertise: A comprehensive understanding of lighting systems, with a strong knowledge of industry ‘best practices’, operational strategies, and the latest trends in lighting technology and techniques.
  • Training & Development: Ability to train and develop team members on technical systems and procedures, ensuring high standards of operation and safety.
  • Technical Qualifications: Formal qualifications in lighting systems (or related fields) would be highly advantageous. Experience with programming and operating MA Lighting consoles in theatre & other live environments.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency in using CAD software to create and modify technical plans, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to frequently lift, twist, and reach, with good coordination for tasks requiring fine motor skills.


Licenses & Certifications:

  • Test and Tag license (preferred)
  • Current Driver’s License
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
  • EWPA Yellow Card
  • Intermediate Riggers Ticket (or a willingness to obtain)
