AV Production Technician (Exhibitions)

Established in 1871, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is located in Sydney’s The Domain adjacent to the Royal Botanic Garden and near the Central Business District. The Art Gallery acknowledges the original custodians of this land – The Gadigal People.

The Art Gallery attracts around 2.4 million visitors annually and runs Australia’s largest education program with over 90,000 student and teacher visits per year. With our expanded campus the Art Gallery has a new state-of-the-art building located next to our existing and much-loved building. Providing us with close to double the exhibition space, the expanded Art Gallery enables us to share more art with more people and provide more family, learning and educational programming for all our audiences.

About the role

This role is part of the Audio Visual Services team, delivering specialised AV production for exhibitions, including the installation of Time Based Art and immersive gallery experiences. It supports the planning, installation, and operation of exhibition AV systems, as well as event and multimedia projects across the Gallery. The position provides expert advice and technical solutions to support the design, realisation, and delivery of assigned projects, ensuring all works are executed safely, compliant with standards, and aligned with exhibition requirements and conservation standards.

What technical/soft skills you require

•    Relevant qualification in Audio Visual or Technical Production, with subsequent relevant experience, or equivalent competence gained through combination of on-the-job training, and experience.

•    Experience and knowledge in a broad range of audio visual and multimedia installation and operation which may include but not limited to: audio visual hardware configuration and installation, rigging, cabling and fit off, sound and video signal flow, digital projection and alignment, sound systems, electronics and wiring, control systems, media content capture and delivery systems, automation, data and networking.

•    Relevant experience in an art gallery or museum or multi venue cultural institution environment.

•    Strong communication and documentation skills and a record of successful delivery of customer service focused audio-visual related projects and experience working in a multi-discipline technical team with a commitment to sharing knowledge and multi-skilling.

•    Advanced computer skills across OSX and Windows platforms. Experience in business enabling systems such as event/project and asset management systems as well as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Targeted questions

1. Tell us about a complex audio-visual or multimedia installation project you have delivered in a

gallery, museum, theatre, or similar environment. What was your role, what technical challenges did you encounter, and how did you ensure the installation was delivered safely, on time, and to the required standard? (300 words max)

2. This role requires working closely with curators, artists, conservators, installers, contractors and other technical teams. Can you provide an example of a project where you needed to collaborate with multiple stakeholders who had differing priorities or requirements? How did you manage those relationships and achieve a successful outcome? (300 words max)

3. Describe a situation where you were managing multiple AV tasks or projects with competing deadlines and changing requirements. How did you prioritise your workload, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure critical deliverables were met? (300 words max)
