HOTA Reaches a New Technical Level

Located on the Gold Coast, HOTA (Home of the Arts) presents live music, theatre, dance, comedy, opera, art and cinema. With 2 theatres, function rooms, an outdoor stage, and a gallery it’s a busy precinct.

When HOTA decided to transition to LED fixtures, they opted for Prolights theatrical lighting including 65 x Prolights ECLProfile CT+ that, according to HOTA’s Head of Lighting, Christopher Britton, has performed brilliantly.

“The Prolights’ range of LED profiles and LED fresnels were a great replacement for us, as we wanted to modernise our equipment, while being eco-friendly,” he commented. “We did a profile shootout and found that other LED profiles on the market didn’t quite have the colour saturation that the Prolights ECLProfile CT+ had. We were impressed with their intensity and power especially in the deeper colours, such as red, amber, or dark blue. They also have an excellent dimming curve especially when you run them at low levels which is something we wanted for our Theatre.”

Keeping it all in the family, HOTA also added 15 x Prolights ECLFresnel 1k TW and 20 x Prolights ECLFresnel 2k TW to the rig. The ECLFresnel 2ks are used for side lighting to supplement the ladders and booms, together with the ECLFresnel 1ks, for overhead lighting.

“The 1Ks give our stage a beautiful wash which is one of the main reasons why we chose them.” added Chris.

Finally, 16 x Prolights EclCyclorama 100 and 5 x EclCyclorama 50 were chosen – a big departure from their old four-colour cyc lights!

“They give our operators so much more flexibility with colour especially for our dance shows, so for us, it was a no-brainer,” remarked Chris. “All of our Prolights equipment has impressed us with their brightness, sharpness and colour output.”

HOTA also purchased two MA Lighting grandMA3 light consoles, one for the main Theatre, and one for the Lakeside function room.

“We looked at different consoles on the market and did our comparisons,” explained Chris. “We concluded that the best option for us was to stay with the MA platform. With five different venues and the variety of shows that we have each day, we needed something that was versatile, easy to use, and fitted with our current infrastructure. Staying with the MA platform, also meant that we would have ease of redundancy across our precinct.

“We’ve dealt with Show Technology for a long time, and our local rep Clint is great. He’s always on the ball and is there with outstanding support whenever we need it.”

The gear was supplied by Entertainment Production Supplies.
