Venue & Technical Manager

About Us

Australian Theatre for Young People’s vision is to empower the next generation of storytellers through theatre. For more than 60 years, ATYP has been the national home for young people to create, perform and tell their stories — giving young Australians the tools and confidence to enrich the nation’s cultural life with their own voices and ideas.

About the Role

The Venue & Technical Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant and efficient management of ATYP’s venue infrastructure, systems and facilities at Pier 2/3, Walsh Bay. This role oversees all technical and building maintenance, manages internal and external venue bookings, leads venue-hire income generation, and ensures the venue meets all regulatory and safety standards.

You’ll hold primary responsibility for the venue’s physical environment — building condition, maintenance schedules, technical systems, compliance documentation, technical safety, hirer requirements and long-range WHS frameworks — working closely with the Learning & Venue Coordinator and the Artistic Director & CEO, who share WHS responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Venue Operations & Space Management — maintain, monitor and upgrade lighting, sound, AV, staging and safety systems; manage long-term maintenance schedules; engage and supervise specialist contractors; maintain compliance registers and certifications
  • Venue Hire — lead the full hire process from enquiry to invoicing, deliver on income targets, and grow the hirer pipeline
  • Scheduling — own and maintain the central venue calendar across workshops, rehearsals, productions and hires
  • WHS — lead WHS systems for the physical venue, including risk assessments, emergency planning and safety reviews
  • Staffing & Contractors — recruit, brief and supervise FOH casuals, technical casuals and contractors
  • Production Coordination — collaborate with the Creative Producer on technical feasibility, and coordinate bump-ins/bump-outs
  • Financial Reporting — prepare hire budgets and costings, and report on utilisation and compliance within budget

About You

You bring strong technical and venue management experience, a sound understanding of WHS frameworks, and the commercial instincts to grow venue-hire income. You’re comfortable balancing hands-on technical work with scheduling, budgeting and stakeholder management, and you’re motivated by supporting a company dedicated to youth-led storytelling.

Details

  • Full-time, 12-month contract
  • $70,000 – $80,000 per annum (commensurate with experience)
  • Reports to: Artistic Director & CEO
  • Direct reports: Venue Duty Technician(s), Venue Front of House Staff
  • Location: Pier 2/3, Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, Sydney
