Following on from our post on the updated version of AS/NZS 3002:2021 Electrical installations – Shows, Carnivals and Events from Standards Australia (https://alia.com.au/a-wtf-moment-with-standards-australia) we received the following information from Eventlec.
Eventlec, one of Australia’s largest providers of temporary electrical equipment specifically developed for the events industry across music, sports and lifestyle sectors, found out about the standard being released the day after the public consultation period closed. Fortunately, with the backing of some of their clients and Neca, they were able to open some doors and speak directly to the board that made the rulings and then Standards Australia to be able to submit to get amendments made.
Below they have listed in summary the key notes and differences to the shows and carnivals electrical standard AS NZS 3002 : 2020 standard.
- 1.1.1 This standard supersedes requirements of AS NZS 3000, it is legislation and is enforceable
- 2.4.2.2 All switching must conduct in both Active and natural conductors (this was in 2008 version)
- 2.5.1 RCDS must be used on all equipment 32Amps and Below
- 3.6.1.6 Maximum length of 32A 3Phase cable is 30m unless calculations have been made and recorded
- 3.6.1.5 Piggybacks are banned Exceptions: Calculated load under 1200W & no more than 4 plugged together
- 2.7.5.4 Aerial Wiring clearances Minimum cable Flyover of 6m. This also requires bunting 6m prior, at the cable fly over and 6m post the flyover
- 3.6.1.2 Minimum flexible extension cord Conductor size of 1.5mm – exception clause to be added: if the Circuit is designed in a way to ensure that the circuit is limited to the 10A and/or the current rating of the supply lead cables will a smaller conductor may be used.
Eventlec is pushing to have amendments made to the below clauses to have exclusions added that state:
- 3.6.1.5 Piggybacks – if the Installation is designed in a way to ensure that the circuit is limited to the 10A and/or the current rating of the piggyback lead then they may be used.
- 2.7.5.4 Aerial Wiring – where the cable is installed in a way that it is unlikely to be disturbed and/or is unable to be disturbed due to site characteristics then this clause does not apply.
- 3.6.1.2 Minimum Conductor Size – if the Circuit is designed in a way to ensure that the circuit is limited to the 10A and/or the current rating of the supply lead cables will a smaller conductor may be used.
Eventelec will keep ALIA updated on this important issue.
