$75,000–$80,000 annually, including salary loading

About the MSO

Established in 1906 the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is not only Australia’s oldest orchestra, but one of the country’s most forward-looking major arts institutions. It currently engages over 2.5 million people through live and recorded broadcasts and performs live to more than 300,000 people annually, in concerts ranging from performances at its home, Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne, to its annual free concerts at Melbourne’s largest outdoor venue, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The MSO presents innovative and engaging programs to audiences of all ages across Victoria through its outreach, education, and community initiatives.

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Production Coordinator to join our Orchestra Operations team. Reporting to the Production Lead, the Production Coordinator plays an important role in supporting the delivery of the MSO’s rehearsals, concerts and other artistic activities.

This is a hands-on and varied role, combining stage and production operations with coordination, logistics and administration. You’ll work closely with musicians, production colleagues, venue teams and contractors to ensure our performances run smoothly and safely.

The position offers a great opportunity to further develop your practical skills and experience in live production while working with one of Australia’s leading performing arts organisations. Due to the nature of the role, a flexible roster applies, including evening and weekend work, as well as touring.

What the Day-to-Day Will Look Like

  • Coordinate stage setups, stage changes, bump ins and bump outs for rehearsals, concerts and events.
  • Prepare stage plans, production schedules and venue documentation to support MSO performances.
  • Supervise and coordinate casual production staff during shifts.
  • Assist with the setup, movement, packing and transport of orchestral instruments and production equipment.
  • Liaise with musicians, venue staff and internal teams to ensure production requirements are delivered effectively.
  • Coordinate instrument and equipment hires, including external bookings and keyboard tuning schedules.
  • Provide administrative support to the Production and Operations teams, including freight lists, stage door lists and transport arrangements.
  • Actively contribute to a safe working environment by identifying and minimising workplace health and safety risks.

About You

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working in a practical, fast-paced environment and takes pride in being part of a collaborative team.

You’ll bring a positive attitude, strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn, alongside the ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to changing production requirements.

Essential Criteria

  • Current Victorian Working with Children Check.
  • Current driver’s licence, with experience driving manual vehicles.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage time, follow instructions and take initiative.
  • Ability to undertake the physical requirements of the role, including manual handling and equipment movement using safe work practices.
  • Flexibility to work across venues throughout Melbourne and Victoria, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and touring.
  • A genuine interest in developing skills and knowledge in orchestral and live production.

Experience in live performance, theatre or event production will be highly regarded, as will additional technical skills, relevant licences or qualifications in workplace health and safety.

What We Offer

  • Salary: $65,000–$70,000 per annum, plus superannuation and an additional 15% salary loading ($9,750–$10,500 per annum) for applicable rostered shift penalties, subject to the terms of the MSO Staff Enterprise Agreement and applicable legislation.
  • Flexible work options – including hybrid working arrangements where possible
  • Employee Wellbeing – access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and internal initiatives that support health, safety, and wellbeing
  • Diversity and inclusion – commitment to a safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful workplace, with initiatives such as our in-progress Reconciliation Action Plan
  • Creative environment – be part of a progressive arts organisation that values innovation and collaboration
  • Concert access – opportunities to attend MSO concerts and events
  • Location – based in Melbourne’s Southbank arts precinct, close to public transport, cafés, and cultural venues
