YOUR ROLE, HONESTLY
We’re looking for an experienced studio recording and mixing professional who enjoys sharing their knowledge and helping emerging audio practitioners develop their skills.
Based at our Sydney campus and reporting to the Department Lead, Audio, you’ll deliver practical teaching that connects current industry practice with clear learning and assessment goals. Teaching allocations will reflect your expertise and departmental needs, with opportunities to teach small studio groups and suitable classroom or laboratory classes.
You’ll work closely with the Senior Lecturer, unit coordinators, fellow lecturers and technical staff to prepare learning activities, support student progress and assess student work.
Strong studio recording and mixing experience, together with confident use of Pro Tools, is central to this role. Additional expertise in Live Sound, Sound for Screen, Electronic Music Production, Sound Design or Immersive Audio would be an advantage.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Prepare and deliver engaging classes, workshops and practical studio activities aligned with approved unit learning outcomes.
- Develop and maintain useful Canvas resources, including instructions, example sessions and assessment guidance.
- Explain assessment requirements, assess submissions using approved rubrics, provide timely feedback and enter grades within required timeframes.
- Participate in assessment moderation and contribute to improvements in teaching resources and unit delivery.
- Monitor attendance, participation, submissions and progress; document student follow-up and refer concerns through agreed academic and student-support processes.
- Provide reasonable student consultation and mentoring outside scheduled classes, within allocated workload.
- Work with technical staff to plan practical tasks and support requirements, and use their documented observations as supporting assessment evidence.
- Create an inclusive learning environment that supports students with different backgrounds and levels of experience.
- Contribute to student projects, showcases, Open Days and relevant industry activities.
- Maintain current professional practice and develop your skills in teaching, learning and assessment.
- Follow JMC’s academic, student-support and studio safety procedures.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Substantial current or recent professional experience in studio recording and mixing.
- Strong practical proficiency in Pro Tools, including recording, editing, mixing and session management.
- Confidence with studio signal flow, microphones, recording systems, mixing consoles and practical troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in higher education or an equivalent training context, explaining technical concepts clearly and providing constructive feedback.
- A relevant graduate diploma/certificate or bachelor’s degree supported by a minimum 5 years demonstrated industry experience.
- Confidence using Canvas or another learning management system, with a willingness to develop your Canvas skills.
- Strong communication, organisation and collaboration skills.
- A commitment to mentoring students, maintaining professional currency and engaging with scholarship relevant to teaching.
- A current Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain one.
YOU’LL THRIVE HERE IF
- You enjoy helping students turn technical knowledge into practical skills and creative confidence.
- You share ideas, welcome feedback and work respectfully with academic and technical colleagues.
- You take ownership of preparation, assessment, student follow-up and agreed deadlines.
- You’re curious about new techniques and enjoy improving your own practice.
- You value both professional standards and a supportive learning environment.
YOU’LL FIND IT HARDER IF
- You find regular preparation, marking, recordkeeping and student follow-up difficult to sustain.
- You prefer working with experienced practitioners and have limited interest in supporting beginners.
- You’re uncomfortable participating in moderation or adapting your teaching in response to feedback.
