Zinc at Fed Square

Zinc, located in Melbourne’s Federation Square, is one of the city’s premier events spaces. Since its opening in 2002, Zinc has been renowned for its top-tier catering, sleek design, and picturesque views of the Yarra River. However, after years of operation, the venue’s audiovisual setup had become outdated. Austage Events, responsible for managing AV at Zinc, partnered with the venue’s owners to overhaul the technology and ensure it met the demands of modern events and conferencing.

THE CHALLENGE

Zinc’s aging AV system struggled with fundamental issues, particularly concerning sound quality. The venue’s harsh acoustics posed a significant challenge – once 500+ guests filled the space, audio intelligibility became seriously compromised. Additionally, the existing infrastructure was labour-intensive, requiring frequent use of scissor lifts to adjust lighting and speakers between events, driving up operating costs. Zinc needed an AV system that would deliver high-quality sound, improve operational efficiency, and seamlessly blend into the venue’s aesthetic, all while addressing the existing acoustic shortcomings.

THE FIX

The solution was a comprehensive AV refit led by Austage Events. The audio system was completely reimagined, centring around a distributed sound design with dBTechnologies VIO X206 full-range loudspeakers and IS5T fill speakers. This setup ensured even audio coverage across the venue while maintaining clear sightlines.

4 x Sub 915s from dBTechnologies ensure plenty of full-range energy to match the clarity, meaning the spoken-word lectern event is as catered for as the party-starter covers bands. Thanks to a Dante network, the subs can be deployed anywhere in the venue where there’s a network connection, including in the foyer where a DJ might be playing to welcome the crowd.

A Q-SYS system provided easy backend processing, allowing quick reconfiguration of the space at the touch of a button.

Acoustic treatment was also prioritised, with the installation of sound-absorbing panels, drapes, and sound-dampening paint on the ceiling baffles, addressing the noise issues that previously plagued the space. THE RESULT

The transformation of Zinc’s AV capabilities has been dramatic. With the new distributed sound system, the venue now delivers excellent coverage and clarity without the need for unsightly PA stacks or additional speakers. The venue’s operations have become more efficient, with significantly reduced labour costs due to the automated lighting and AV systems. As a result, reconfigurations between events are faster and easier, allowing for a seamless transition from corporate conferences to lively social events.

Feedback from both regular clients and event attendees has been overwhelmingly positive. “We’re not only saving time and money, but we’re also receiving compliments from guests with no AV background,” said Nick Ellul, General Manager of Austage Events. “The venue is delighted, and that’s the ultimate endorsement.”
