ABOUT SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY
Sydney Dance Company, under the Artistic Directorship of Rafael Bonachela, is Australia’s leading contemporary dance company. With a full-time company of 16 dancers, an active public dance class program (both in-studio and virtual) and a broad-reaching education and outreach department, the Company offices are located in the newly renovated Wharf Studios at Walsh Bay. Sydney Dance Company performs regularly in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne as well as undertaking extensive national and international touring.
The newly renovated Walsh Bay Arts Precinct is the home of Sydney Dance Company. With 4 professional dance studios, a newly built rehearsal and performance space with a 79-seat retractable seating bank and theatre bar, and café space with a backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the studios are utilised for rehearsals, dance classes, performances, and a range of internal and external events and activities.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Venue Technical Coordinator is a new role that will provide technical production, facilities coordination, and operational and logistical support for the delivery of events and activities taking place at the Sydney Dance Company Wharf Studios and partner venues. The role will contribute to the success and smooth delivery of a wide variety of events and activities such as internal and external rehearsals, auditions, dance classes, dinners, cocktail functions, galas, fundraisers, festivals, performances, meetings, digital streaming, film shoots, venue hires and music concerts.
Working across Sydney Dance Company’s multiple departments, the role will coordinate and support technical production requirements such as lighting and sound equipment and operation, presentation and video conferencing systems, equipment and furniture set up and maintenance, contractor bump-in and out schedules, casual crew coordination, site deliveries and traffic management for load-ins, dance vinyl and other flooring preparation, and wharf precinct systems such as air conditioning settings, waste management and fire isolation.
High-level planning, coordination and problem-solving skills with an understanding of venue and performance technical production processes are integral to the success of this role. The role is primarily hands-on and will often involve working as part of a team across evenings or weekends. An ability to work flexibly responding to the timing of activities will be important in this role.
REPORTING / WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Venue Technical Coordinator sits within Sydney Dance Company’s growing Commercial department which includes Advanced Training, Open Programs, Education, and Venue Hire with the primary purpose of delivering technical production support across Sydney Dance Company’s varied activities.
The Venue Technical Coordinator will report to the Events and Venue Hire Manager. The role will also work closely with the Director of Operations and Open Programs, Technical Director, Technical Coordinator, Stage Manager, Deputy Executive Director (External Affairs) Customer Service and Ticketing Specialist and suppliers and contractors when required providing an opportunity to develop technical production skills across a wide variety of activities with a mix of stakeholders.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Ensure all technical requirements are planned for and delivered for the smooth execution of activities and events for internal and external stakeholders including venue hire clients.
* Provide technical advice and solutions, working within agreed budgets, when delivering production elements both for Sydney Dance Company events and external hirers.
* Supervise and support venue hirers including operating lighting/sound/AV, setting up furniture and coordinating staging elements where required.
* Ensure legal, noise management, risk management, and all work health and safety obligations are followed.
* Support with the organisation of facilities for deliveries, traffic control, security, waste management, first aid, where required.
* In conjunction with the Events and Venue Hire Manager, implement, maintain and update Work Health and Safety procedures, including inducting visiting artists, contractors and hirers, in order to maintain a safe working environment at all times.
* Coordinate suppliers, handle client queries and troubleshoot on the day of events to smooth delivery from bump-in to bump out and minimise disruption to other activities.
* Adhere to, and support continuous improvement of, administrative processes to promote efficient business operations.
* Provide on-site supervision during events, ensuring compliance to safety protocols, adherence to risk assessment mitigation plans, and providing pre and post event site inspections.
* Possibility to provide technical production support to Sydney Dance Company performances from time to time.
* Contribute to post-event evaluation to inform future events.
* Maintain and ensure appropriate use of equipment such as retractable seating bank, audio systems, lighting equipment and systems, furniture, and electronics.
* Work collaboratively in a small team across multiple departments, as well as autonomously to achieve set tasks to meet deadlines.
* Maintain and improve on current operational procedures while respecting the restrictions of occupying a heritage building as part of the Government managed precinct.
* Maintain working knowledge of relevant industry-related awards, standards and legislation
* Other duties as required and directed.
POSITION CRITERIA
Essential
* Relevant industry experience, and/or a degree in Theatre Technical Production or equivalent
* Thorough working knowledge of, and experience in applying, advanced technical production skills within a theatrical and/or working dance studio environment
* Competency with hardware and software including ETC Lighting Consoles, QLab, Vector Works, MS Office Suite, Zoom and systems networking and the ability to take initiative to learn operation of a range of other available technical equipment
* Experience in venue hire client liaison and/or supervision, including providing assistance to hirers with limited technical vocabulary in order to realise their production elements successfully.
* Strong communication skills and stakeholder engagement and demonstrated customer service experience.
* Self-management skills including the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and manage time effectively
* Experience in supplier and casual staff management
* Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings.
