ABOUT UMSU
With a living history that extends over 130 years, at the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) we are committed to providing quality experiences on campus that create a community for students from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
As a non-profit organisation run by students, for students, we keep the arts, representation, advocacy, live music and cultural services alive on campus. We provide the platforms for students to immerse themselves in a wealth of cultural facilities and events, whilst having access to quality support services. It’s about making sure that students have advocacy and representation on campus. And it’s all about the battle to keep student voices in the big picture whilst making students’ time at the University fun and enjoyable.
ABOUT THE DIVISION
The Arts & Culture Division is responsible for facilitating student participation and engagement in student-lead artistic activities, for working with elected student representatives to provide an arts & culture programme that supports the objectives of UMSU, and the operation of a popular culture borrowing library.
The division is made up of Union House Theatre, Arts Programs, Rowden White Library and AV Melbourne.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Union House Theatre Team is headed up by the Artistic Director/Theatre Coordinator. The Venue & Production Manager is a member of a collaborative working environment within Union House Theatre and operates under the broad direction of the Artistic Director/Theatre Coordinator. Reporting through to this role are a Mechanist/Stage Carpenter and a Head Technician.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Venue & Production Manager at Union House Theatre is responsible for providing production, venue and event support for student theatre and the Union House Theatre program.
Additionally, the Venue & Production Manager is responsible for coordinating activities within all performing arts spaces, ensuring production and technical resources are efficiently and safely operated and maintained and online events are supported. The incumbent will ensure that a safe work environment is maintained and will also maintain UHT’s risk management systems on behalf of UHT staff, Casual Theatre Workers, students and all venue hirers.
Responsibilities include:
- Venue operations
- Key stakeholder relationship management
- Compliance
- Monitoring and supporting safe work practices
- Production management
- Student engagement and supporting student productions
- Administrative duties
ABOUT YOU
To succeed in this position, you will possess relevant qualifications in technical theatre production and/or extensive experience in technical and venue operations within performing arts venues.
You are a creative professional with independent judgement and initiative, along with the ability to identify and highlight ongoing and emerging issues for the student population as appropriate.
Your interpersonal and relationship-building skills include the ability to communicate ideas effectively and respectfully to different stakeholders, enabling students to get the most out of their University theatre experience.
You have values consistent to the organisation that supports your work within UMSU to a diverse and socially aware audience. You have an alignment with the principles of accessibility, social inclusion and student unionism.
Essential skills include:
Tertiary qualifications in technical theatre production and/or extensive experience in technical and venue operations within performing arts venues;
A sophisticated knowledge of the performing arts and of the unique management issues associated with successfully operating performing arts venues;
Demonstrated experience in stage and production management and design;
Demonstrated leadership, organisational, problem solving and associated administrative skills;
Advanced knowledge of theatre and workplace health and safety, hazard identification and risk assessment;
Experience in providing technical training for the performing arts;
Experience and interest in online event platforms and programs;
Demonstrated understanding of relevant computer systems and software; and
Accredited First Aid Certificate.
