Venue Operations and Technical Manager

Upper Coomera, Gold Coast QLD

Knowledge, Skill Requirements and Experience

  • Proven experience in venue technical operations including a thorough knowledge of venue lighting, audio and live streaming 
  • Stage management experience
  • Ability to operate QLAB, Mainstage, Black Magic AV and MA Lighting.
  • Understanding of Dante Networking and proficiency with Yamaha and Beringer Consoles as well as Pro Tools, Apple Mainstage and Pro Presenter software
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a larger team especially within tight plotting/bump-in timelines

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office and other venue/technical specific software 
  • Previous experience in a school environment

Due to the nature of the role the successful candidate will be required to work flexible hours to suit productions and event times, many which will be in the evenings. This highly motived individual will display the qualities of effective organisation, communication and budget efficiencies. 

This position is responsible for, but not limited to;

  • Organise and assist with College events and activities that require audio visual input including live streaming by supporting departments and key individuals with planning and preparation for their intended activities.
  • Manage the technical aspects of key College events including Speech Night, guest speakers, information evenings, assemblies, family chapels, etc.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to all speakers/presenters for College activities and or events including preparation and guidance of any presentations and/or associated deliverables.
  • Management and regular maintenance of audio-visual technologies in venues and liaison with external professionals in related areas. 
  • Provide support, training and development to staff in the setup and use of audio-visual based equipment and peripherals throughout the College
  •  Maintain up to date knowledge in audio-visual technologies
  • Keep relevant equipment inventories, including maintenance schedules and conduct an annual stock take of AV equipment against an audited asset register
  • Manage all assets and oversee all equipment to ensure it is kept in a neat, clean and tidy condition, with all lighting, sound & AV equipment not in use being stored in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Maintain an inventory of stock/equipment; providing reports on faulty equipment to ensure hazards are eliminated, and replacement and repairs are carried out effectively
  • Take on the role of Producer for each annual College Musical
  • Actively contributing to the success of the performing arts and IT team and the wider organisation by seeking better ways of working by embracing innovation
  • Organise, train and lead the student technical team, Certificate III students (Production) and trainees to assist in sound, lighting and backstage operations. 
  • Management, setup, operation and maintenance of all sound and AV equipment and services for events and presentations across various venues across the College, including outdoor activities such as Sports Days, Carols, Saint Stephen’s Day
  • Liaise with the College’s WHS and Compliance Officer to ensure all safety procedures are considered and adhered to for all performances, events and activities relating to all technical and mechanical aspects of performances, and that all events uphold legislative requirements
  • Provide input into Safe Working Method Statements and Risk Assessments to mitigate risk around the use and operation of technical equipment and show specific processes 
  • Specific to the venues (and outdoor locations), operation and maintenance of all lighting, vision, streaming, sound and mechanical elements
  • Operate sound & AV equipment, including presenter equipment in all venues, incorporating board operation, general and theatrical lights, to create and reproduce lighting effects for setups performances and events 
  • Provide input and feedback on new technologies, equipment and software upgrades to ensure the College is able to uphold standards against the strategic intent of the leadership.

Stakeholder management

  • Assist College staff with use of resources, equipment and materials as required 
  • Support the planning and development of key activities across the College and with key individuals, so that a collaborative and cohesive outcome is able to be delivered 
  • Manage presenters and hirers and relationships with external suppliers to ensure the highest level of service and presentation is always maintained
  • Develop plans for the trainees and the student tech team and liaise with external agencies, as required to ensure all training deliverables are met and that all reporting requirements are upheld.  
  • Liaise with HR as required to ensure all trainees are engaged and managed appropriately and as required.

  • Demonstrate and practice effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication   
  • Excellent personal organisation, planning and time management skills including the ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Carry out other duties as required by the Principal

  • Maintain a degree of flexibility in working hours from time to time as required for the position
  • Accept that the College reserves the right to modify the position to meet its operating needs
  • Undertake other reasonable and relevant duties within skills, knowledge and capabilities and as directed by the Principal or their representative
  • Comply with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011, codes of practice and other safety guidance material

Mandatory Clearances/Certifications

  • Blue Card, in accordance with ‘No Card, No Start law’, as per the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000
