The Perth Theatre Trust (the Trust) is a statutory authority established and constituted under the Perth Theatre Trust Act 1979 to oversee the management and operations of theatres vested or leased to the Trust by the State Government.
The Trust is responsible for the care, control, management, maintenance, operation and improvement of theatres under its control which currently includes the Albany Entertainment Centre, His Majesty’s Theatre, Subiaco Arts Centre and State Theatre Centre WA.
Conditions
This is a casual vacancy, for a period of 6 months, with a possibility of extension. There will also be a Pool running for a period of 18 months from the initial appointment. Applicants deemed suitable will be placed into a pool from which full-time, part-time, casual, fixed term or permanent appointments may be made.
The successful applicant must possess a Construction Industry Safety Awareness Training Certification (Blue/White Card) and as The Trust venues operate in a 7 day a week environment; there is a requirement to work weekends and after normal business hours.
Location
This position is based in Perth, however employees may be required to travel and work from any of the Perth Theatre Trust venues as required.
Job Description
The Venue Head of Department Mechanist coordinates technical requirements and is responsible for all staging elements, sets and machinery with the exception of lighting and electrical equipment and applications.
Some responsibilities include (but not limited to):
• Pre and Post Production: Liaise with Technical Managers and incoming production representatives in regards to theatrical and staging requirements. Coordinate the preparation and dismantling of the theatre before and after productions and delegates specifics tasks to staff.
• Supervises placement of scenery onstage, construction and dismantling of set and associated mechanisms, use of theatre fly system and fly/rigging equipment, flown masking elements, tools, miscellaneous stock and equipment.
• Non Production: Liaise with Technical Manager to perform maintenance duties on the staging mechanisms and equipment. Monitor fly system and orchestra pit lift operations, Studio Cablenet and chain-hoist systems as well as the scheduling of ongoing maintenance.
• Monitor condition and stock of tools and hardware and make necessary purchases and repairs.
• At all times: Supervise rehearsal sessions providing guidance to mechanists in regards to specific tasks, times, expectations and details of the duties.
• Supervise activities in and round the stage to avoid staff, crew visitors and performers being placed in potential danger and in the event of an emergency assume the role of stage warden to coordinate evacuation.
