Tom is a lighting designer for theatre and live performance, based in Melbourne Australia. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, he works across a wide range of mediums including theatre, dance, cabaret and live events. His skills and services include lighting design & re-lighting, installation & operation, equipment hire and pre-visualisation services.
Recently, Tom was looking for a mid-sized moving head fixture to compliment his existing inventory. After assessing a number of different options, he decided that the Maverick MK1 Spot offered the best combination of brightness, quality, features as well as being extremely cost effective.
The MK1 Spots provide Tom’s design company with a 350W LED yoke spot fixture, “The Maverick MK1 Spot has an extremely flat field, which makes it a great unit for key light and gobo projection,” stated Tom. “I also love the fact that it offers full CMY mixing and a ridiculous zoom range, and the standard gobos are really versatile, allowing me to create a whole host of different textures and looks.”
“This unit will be working very hard on a lot of the music theatre and live music work we do,” continued Tom. “It really does punch above its weight. It’s also a great unit to spec on smaller shows where budgets are tighter – you can still get some really big looks that you would typically expect from much larger units.”
The MK1 utilises 16-bit dimming of master dimmer for smooth control of fades and a variable CMY colour mixing system to create a wide pallet of colours. It has two gobo wheels, a prism, iris and frost filter.
“Showtools support has always been really great and this time around was no exception. The units arrived on my doorstep already packed in their purpose built road cases, ready to go,” said Tom.
Now that Tom Willis Lighting Design has invested in the Maverick MK1 Spot, he has a new weapon in his lighting inventory to do events of all sizes and has a point of difference to service all types of clients. Tom commented, “I’m very impressed with these units. They’ve already gone out on a number of shows and have performed beautifully. I definitely plan to add more to the inventory in the near future.”
