Theatre Technician

About The Role

This position is responsible for safely and efficiently delivering high quality professional technical and production services. Reporting to the Technical Manager, Technicians provide professional technical operation, supervision and support to internal, professional and community users and is a key contact point for front-line venue users at Darwin Entertainment Centre.

You will be part of a busy, positive environment, working within an experienced team where we deliver professional and community live performances including theatre, contemporary and classical music, comedy, dance, cabaret, physical theatre, festivals and more.

Whilst in this position there will be opportunities for development and onsite training to advance your skill set across the technical disciplines.

This position is a rostered role with a guaranteed 25 hours per week with the opportunity for additional hours. You will be required to work across a wide range of hours / weekdays / public holidays where you may be required to stand for prolonged periods of time and must be comfortable with undertaking physical duties.

A Bit About You

We are looking for individuals who have a passion for the Arts and are principally seeking those who can demonstrate proven experience within the disciplines of stage management, staging, audio, lighting and vision operation. Preferably candidates will also have a general understanding of venue operations. You will be focused on excellence of delivery and understand that safety is integral in the day-to-day operations of the venue. You will be able to use imagination and creativity to contribute towards process improvements and efficiencies. As a team player, you will have excellent communication skills and put customers at the centre of everything you deliver. To be successful in the role you will also have some administration and IT skills.

Key Accountabilities of the Role

Event Delivery

  • Act as Duty Technician as rostered during venue use supervising the activities of other rostered staff and venue users and acting as Chief Warden and Area Warden as required as part of the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Effectively liaise with venue users and their technical crews to support their event planning and delivery processes and provide advice to gain the most effective use of technical resources delivering to the highest standard possible.
  • Read, interpret and implement tech riders, information, production drawings and plans and prepare technical documentation for performances and finalise end of shift reports.
  • Ensure OHS procedures are followed to ensure a safe workplace for self, the team and all venue users and efficiently report any OH&S incidents, hazards and near misses as per organisational process.
  • Provide the highest standard of professional customer service to all cultural venue users by developing strong relationships with all clients and customers to ensure a high level of satisfaction.
  • Understand and apply a high level of theatre craft, terminology and theatre etiquette.
  • Provide set-up, operation, supervision and co-ordination of production equipment including lighting equipment, audio visual, stage sets and safely operate the counterweight fly system and other theatre machinery in accordance with safety standards and specifications.
  • Liaise effectively with Front of House and Box Office to ensure the smooth operation of performances and events.
  • Assistance with regular maintenance and upgrades of all technical and stage equipment in accordance with relevant industry standards, OHS procedures and equipment specifications.  


Business Support

  • Contribute to a positive working culture of continuous improvement
  • Support technical functions across the business.
  • Contribute to the review and improvement of DEC’s policies, procedures and operating systems to ensure the most up to date and professional service is provided to all clients and patrons.
  • Complete tasks and projects as assigned by the Technical Manager in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Complete other duties as directed within the skills and abilities of a position at this level.


Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria

  • Proven experience supervising a venue as a venue representative or key client contact.
  • Demonstrated experience in event delivery including a general understanding of venue and event operations including FOH and Box Office.
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal and liaison skills and an ability to build relationships, support and work with professional touring organisations, community groups, and individual members of the community.
  • Developed skills in lighting, audio, vision, staging, counterweight flys, rigging or stage management including an ability to interpret detailed theatrical plans and stage plots.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a team and work independently as required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of Work Health and Safety and safe work procedures as applied to this role.
  • Ability to work flexible rosters including weekdays, weekends, public holidays, school holidays and evening shifts.
  • Some administrative experience, including computer literacy and use of Microsoft 365 and other relevant software packages with a focus on attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in response to work demands and remain calm and maintain composure when working under pressure.


Advantageous Criteria

  • Current driver’s licence.
  • A certificate or qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Ochre Card, First Aid Certificate, White Card, Working at Heights and Rigging license desirable, or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience with ETC ION and GrandMA Lighting Platforms, Digico and Midas Sound Platforms and Qlab.
