Theatre Technician

This is a permanent part-time (0.4FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2024

Perth Modern School is seeking a dynamic and motivated Theatre Technician to work collaboratively within the school community in the pursuit of excellence in all areas of the curriculum. The successful applicant will work closely with staff and external hirers in the provision of audio-visual, stage lighting and sound for small and large events including productions, presentations, screening and promotional events, and conferences. The role may require the ability to work flexible hours including evening and weekends.

The successful applicant will work primarily within three venues at the school. The 700-seat Cyril Tyler Auditorium is a recently completed, wonderfully versatile and modern space with state-of-the-art equipment, Beasley Hall, a magnificent 115-year-old heritage building, and the Tyler McCusker Sports Centre, a large gymnasium which is used for whole school assemblies.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have excellent organisational skills and possess the ability to plan and prioritise tasks and work well under pressure. You should also ideally have a strong knowledge of theatre operations, equipment and maintenance and venue operations.

Perth Modern School is Western Australia’s only fully academically selective school for gifted students in Years 7 to 12. Centrally located in Subiaco, the School provides a differentiated curriculum that develops the individual skills and abilities of academically gifted students. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Knowledge and experience in the maintenance and use of theatre technical equipment.
  • Broad-based knowledge of theatre operations, equipment and maintenance and venue operations.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively liaise with individuals at all levels.
  • High-level organisational, conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to provide innovative thinking in problem solving.
  • Experience or qualifications in lighting and/or sound.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Eligibility And Training Requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
