Theatre Technician – 2023 Festival (September)

ABOUT THE POSITION

We are looking for experienced Theatre Technicians/Operators to manage the technical requirements of Sydney Fringe Managed Venues and operate the sound and lighting for participating shows. Reporting to the Programs Manager, our ideal candidates will have strong experience working within a festival environment, theatre, or live entertainment venue. Working with the Production Co-Ordinator, the Technical Operators provide integral support to artists for the successful operation of the production and technical elements of the Sydney Fringe Festival. This role is also required for festival bump ins and outs and contains a large degree of physical labour and time on your feet.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

Production and Technical

• To assist in the operation of all technical aspects pertaining to the use of Sydney Fringe Managed Venues and the associated theatrical equipment.

• To safely and efficiently set up, maintain and operate stage lighting, audio and visual equipment and staging.

• To ensure the correct use and maintenance of the in-house show systems.

• Participate in the bump-in and bump-out of productions in Sydney Fringe Managed Venues.

• To operate up to three shows a night in the main house at a Sydney Fringe Managed Venue.

• To provide technical support to the artists performing in the smaller spaces at Sydney Fringe Managed Venues (who will provide their own operator).

• Liaise with artists, producers, managers and other stakeholders.

• To carry out appropriate duties as directed by the Program Manager and Production Coordinator.

• Complete daily technical and equipment checklists and advise Production Coordinator of any lost/damaged equipment.

• Working understanding of WH&S principles and regulations – SWMS and Risk Assessments in an Arts environment.

• Ensure all health and safety requirements are met for use of the performance spaces and venues.

• Attend daily production and event meetings during the festival period.

• Ensure all the above-mentioned requirements are completed to the highest professional standards. Communication

• Work collaboratively with all members of the festival team, ensuring open and clear communication and attend meetings where required.

• Maintain effective relationships with all artists, suppliers, contractors, volunteers and staff.

Key Skills and Knowledge

• This role is a key contributor to event delivery and artist satisfaction. It is critical that you are service-oriented, problem solution focused, flexible and professionally mature;

• Demonstrated ability to work independently under pressure, making sound decisions and ability to effectively manage time in a multiple task environment with strict deadlines;

• Ability to communicate and develop relationships with a broad range of people, both internal and external to the organisation, in a professional and ethical manner;

• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy;

• Ability to work in a small integrated team as well as the ability to work autonomously;

• Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills; • Patient, amiable and good humoured;

• Enthusiasm and a positive attitude, together with an ability to be a team player;

• Have a commitment to a safe and efficient working environment.

Key Selection Criteria

• At least 2 years relevant experience as a Theatre technician and operator for arts and cultural events, festivals or similar;

• Broad knowledge and experience in set up and operation of stage craft including sound, AV and lighting;

• Tertiary education in Technical Production or similar;

• Demonstrated experience in cultivating positive relationships with venues and contractors ;

• Understanding on the independent arts production;

• Experience in assisting companies in adapting their presentations to suit different venues;

• Experience in maintaining theatrical equipment;

• Demonstrated experience in Compliance and Risk Management ;

• Demonstrated experience within Work Health and Safety policy implementation, as well as emergency response development ;

• Current drivers license.
