Theatre Specialist, Melbourne

We are seeking theatre specialists to join our Melbourne office. Ideal candidates will have a background in stage lighting design, set design, technical direction, or similar theatre design background – and a love of the performing arts. This will begin as a part-time position, and we will be encouraging you to continue your theatre practice while working and training with us.

Candidates will have a university degree or similar formal training, and at least three years working in the performing arts. You should have broad interests and a willingness and aptitude to learn. You will be trained in the practice of theatre consulting.

Your understanding of theatre should be grounded in the experience of having lived it. This includes hands-on experience with stage lighting, rigging, load-ins and outs, technical rehearsals, and opening nights in theatres, music halls, dance venues, opera houses – any performing arts setting. This first-hand experience will greatly increase your understanding of theatre planning.

Much of your early work with us will be devoted to drafting theatre systems in AutoCAD and Revit. Your early training will include courses in these platforms with follow up instruction from our staff. The right candidate will already have a good understanding of drafting fundamentals and experience with any drafting software including Vectorworks or similar.

Theatre consultants work with theatre owners, architects, and building engineers to plan and design essential elements of performing arts spaces. Our work broadly includes theatre planning (for front of house, auditoria, stages, and back of house areas) and equipment consulting (designing rigging, stage lighting, stage machinery, acoustic, and seating systems).

Schuler Shook is an equal opportunity employer with offices in Melbourne and the United States. We promote diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We will honour your experiences, perspectives, and unique identity.

Our Australian projects include:

  • Hamer Hall redevelopment
  • QPAC new 1500 seat theatre
  • Regent Theatre redevelopment
  • Sydney Lyric Theatre redevelopment
  • University of Melbourne New Student Precinct
  • RMIT Capitol Theatre redevelopment
  • Cairns Performing Arts Centre
  • HOTA amphitheater (Gold Coast)
  • Bunjil Place
  • Ulumbarra Theatre

When you work and train with us you will meet some of the most accomplished theatre owners, architects, engineers, and suppliers in Australia.

This is a part time job with flexible hours (20 hours per week). We hope that you will grow with the company and eventually transition to a full-time career with us. Annual part time salary is approximately $33,000 plus Super and benefits.

All applications must be submitted via email and include a cover letter, resume, and portfolio to demonstrate your design capabilities, teamwork skills, and the ability to communicate clearly.
