Technical Supervisor

Ensemble Theatre is Australia’s longest continuously running professional theatre company and boasts the 3rd largest number of theatre subscribers in the country. Based in Kirribilli, Ensemble Theatre is a welcoming and inclusive theatre and gives voice to diverse stories by presenting an annual season of exceptional plays by Australian and international playwrights. Each year we aim to create theatre that is accessible, enlightening, surprising and above all entertaining.

Running alongside the annual season are audience experience and education programs which include a series of projects and events offering opportunities to emerging writers, directors, schools and young people. In 2020, Ensemble Theatre will launch its Reconciliation Action Plan and present eight new Australian works including the world premiere of BLACK COCKATOO as part of Sydney Festival. Ensemble Theatre engages Australia’s most prominent directors and designers and nurtures emerging artists. Ensemble Theatre is a well-resourced and intimate venue of 220 seats.

THE ROLE

The Technical Supervisor is a full-time position and a key member of the Ensemble Production team. The Technical Supervisor is responsible for delivery of the technical elements for all Ensemble performances, events and other related activities, at home and on tour specifically lighting, sound and AV. This role reports to the Production Manager and supervises all technical casual crew and venue contractors and other casual staff as necessary.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Plan and Manage all aspects of the theatres technical operation within the theatres technical operation budget
  • Support the Production Manager and key creatives/producers in the delivery of the technical elements for all Ensemble performances, events and other related activities, at home and on tour specifically lighting, sound and AV.
  • Assess technical requirements and develop budgets for potential and future productions and events including providing technical specifications for touring productions.
  • As directed, provide creative content for productions such as (but not limited to) sound effects, music and/or AV elements, for rehearsal and production within agreed budgets and parameters.
  • Oversee purchase, hire, delivery and return of technical items for each production.
  • Apply for and maintain licenses for productions as required including APRA/AMCOS.
  • Support Production Manager in delivery of Ensemble productions and other activities by:
    • Booking, supervising and training technical crew, including casuals and contractors
    • Ensuring the technical and design aspects of a production abide by current licensing and WHS regulations
    • Work with the Production Manager to identify and solve transfer challenges
  • Responsible for ensuring all technical staff are compliant with industry and company policies and hold necessary qualifications and certificates to ensure a high level of Workplace, Health and Safety practice is followed
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of necessary awards and legislation including the Performer’s Certified Agreement, the Live Theatre and Concert Award and relevant Workplace, Health and Safety legislation.

Venue:

  • Undertake regular testing & tagging of electrical equipment and organisation of maintenance schedule
  • Manage and implement annual or ad hoc maintenance of technical equipment within allocated budgets, as required.
  • Provide regular reports to the Ensemble management team regarding the state of technical equipment and necessary maintenance and upgrades.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA 

  • Demonstrated two years’ experience within a professional Performing Arts or Entertainment venue in a senior technical role.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within a small team.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem solving skills, excellent communication skills, and a can do attitude.
  • A broad technical knowledge, including a sound understanding of staging and technical systems, production week protocols and the ability to operate to a basic level lighting, sound, AV and/or communications systems.
  • Desirable to be able to create simple sound effects and AV elements for use in Ensemble productions.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and other relevant software packages including digital technologies and audio visual applications, specifically CAD, QLAB & ETC lighting consoles.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety issues, particularly in theatre
  • Current Manual Driver’s License
  • Willingness and flexibility to work extended hours as required.

POSITION HOURS, REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS:  

  • 38 hours per week (5 days), Monday to Friday. This position will also involve irregular hours, including evenings and weekends during production periods. Any overtime is calculated as per the award.
  • 10% employer contribution to superannuation
  • 20 annual leave per annum accrued pro rata + 8 days personal leave per annum pro rata
  • Industry award entitlements apply, e.g. annual and sick leave
  • Complimentary tickets to Ensemble Theatre productions subject to availability.
  • Salary: $65k + super
