Proudly regional, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus (FFFC) trains and performs on Wiradjuri land. It is one of Australia’s leading youth arts companies and an Arts8 national centre for excellence, delivering a combined circus and academic program for young people aged 8-18.
As part of this program, the company creates and tours award-winning contemporary circus for young and family audiences. We support the wider circus sector through creative development residencies, open training, employment and small-scale presentations.
Due for completion in November 2023, The Borderville Theatre is an education and performance space for the creation and development of new circus work. It is the FFFC’s first ever permanent performance space and will be home to our Under Construction residency program.

TECHNICAL SUPERVISOR JOB PROFILE
Based in Albury-Wodonga, the Technical Supervisor will assist with the coordination, management and execution of technical and production services for the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and visiting artists, ensuring that all operational aspects of the building including maintenance and compliance are met, with the facilities available.
The Technical Supervisor will assist in the operation of all technical aspects pertaining to the use of FFFC spaces and associated theatrical equipment, across all areas.
- To safely and efficiently set up, maintain and operate stage lighting, audio, video equipment and stage machinery.
- Participate in the bump in and bump out of productions and events
- Assist with maintaining the Company’s technical equipment and assets by carrying outrepairs and maintenance as needed.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The below position description reflects the essential functions of the position at this time, however this list is not finite and duties may change as required.
Technical
- Program and operate the venue’s technical equipment, including staging, computerised lighting desk and audio desk, for FFFC and external artist performances, rehearsals and creative developments as required.
- Where necessary, act as stage manager for rehearsals, creative developments and performances.
- Design and operate LX for performances, rehearsals and creative developments, and assist with sound design as required.
- Work with Technical Director to oversee and coordinate all technical operations of the FFFC facilities, performances, rehearsals and creative developments.
- Manage the bump-in, technical requirements and bump out of all internal and external events/performances.
- Manage the lighting and sound operations of events/performances directly or through appropriate staffing.
- Effectively plan with FFFC and external artists to ensure staffing, technical requirements and access are understood, delivering safe and successful events and performances.
- Assist in the development of production schedules.
- Manage external hire enquiries, bookings, contracts, venue plans, rosters and reporting for the Borderville Theatre.
- Liaise with event production personnel, including conducting inductions and training as required to ensure safe and optimal use of the venue’s equipment and facilities.
- Maintain industry knowledge of best practice in house staging, mechanical, audio, lighting and AV equipment.
- Ensure maintenance of the building, including all technical equipment, building, plant, and fixtures/fittings, is completed to appropriate standards.
- To undertake other duties as required, this will include building maintenance.
- Tour with FFFC productions as required.
- The ability to work effectively as part of the Technical team.
Administration / Operations
- Ensure show and training requirements are met in a timely and efficient manner.
- Provide accurate and timely cost estimates including reporting to assist project reconciliations.
- Ensure operations fulfil the requirements of projects and are within budgeted costs.
- Work with the Technical Director to ensure efficient and effective day- to-day operation of FFFC facilities.
- Act in higher duties as Technical Director when required.
- Provide a consistently high level of service to all projects in a prompt and pleasant manner, maintaining the highest ethical standards and confidentiality.
- Participate in site inductions, develop and implement risk assessments and inspections as appropriate.
- Ensure adherence to all FFFC policies and procedures.
- Undertake other relevant duties as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrated previous experience in a technical services role in a performing arts environment and/or relevant tertiary qualification.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of staging, lighting and sound equipment including but not limited to computerised lighting desks, intelligent lighting fixtures, audio mixing consoles, and AV equipment.
- A strong understanding of the needs and requirements of a range of stage presentations and events, experience and understanding of circus is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated technical understanding and knowledge of work health and safety in a theatrical environment and identifying risk management processes.
- Experience / understanding in building operational coordination of venues / facilities.
- Demonstrated experience in managing time, setting priorities and organising work.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Strong administrative skills and computer skills.
- Ability to interpret CAD drawings.
- Class C Driver’s License
- Have Right to Work in Australia documentation.
Desirable Criteria
- Licence requirements – EWP, Rigging, Electrical Test & Tag, Working at Heights, Construction Industry Induction Card (or willingness to obtain qualification).
- Light rigid driving licence (or willingness to obtain qualification).
- Level 2 Workplace First Aid (or willingness to obtain qualification)
- Experience with CAD programs
