Technical Officer (Audio)

  • Salary Package: (HEW Level 7, Step 1), $99,739 – $108,139 p.a, plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Appointment Type: Continuing, Full-Time for Audio Technician
  • Location: Macquarie University, North Ryde

We are looking for a self-motivated audio technician to join the Technical Services team in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University. This position will support other members of the team in various technical areas, with the ideal candidate possessing strong audio and performance technical ability as required within the faculty.

This role would be a great opportunity for someone looking to broaden their aptitude and experience using the latest industry technologies.

About You

You will have a keen interest in technology and will be able to demonstrate your strengths in audio and live performance contexts. You will have a robust knowledge in studio recording and live sound in addition to related performance technologies, such as basic lighting operation and stage management.

You will possess initiative, problem solving, and excellent communication skills and You will have great teamwork skills, including the ability to work with a technical team as well as academics from a range of disciplines.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Process the equipment and room booking system for the Faculty’s Technical Services unit, by preparing, issuing, and checking in equipment and rooms as required;
  • Provide technical advice, support and instruction to staff and students, in the use of equipment and facilities relevant to the supported disciplines and technical spaces in the Faculty.
  • Install and maintain equipment to ensure reliable operation of technical spaces within budget and as required.
  • Work with the Manager, Technical Services to create and refine facility development and equipment procurement plans and budgets.
  • Work with MQ IT to re-image computer systems and maintain the reliable operation of networks, hardware and software (including specialised lighting and video production packages) in related technical spaces,
  • Maintain the reliable operation of specialist technical spaces and assist with required upgrades and refurbishments in collaboration with Property Services
  • Develop and deliver technical instruction, documentation and demonstration for staff and students on the use of systems and technologies.
  • Assist with documenting events (recording & editing), including performance works, seminars and other activities across the relevant disciplines’ teaching and research activities.
  • Provide recommendations for relevant equipment and facilities in order to continually improve the quality and operational efficiency of the Faculty. This includes conducting research on technical solutions, critically evaluating them, and modifying facilities, equipment inventory and practices as required.
  • Prepare, issue and check-in relevant loan equipment for students and staff through the endorsed equipment and facilities booking system as required.
  • In collaboration with key stakeholders, plan and roster technical support for peak demand and any substantial events, to optimise resource allocation and meet demand.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with all statutory and legislative requirements.
  • Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations.
  • Perform any other duties as directed and appropriate for this classification.

Essential Criteria

  • Completion of relevant certificate and/or relevant work experience;
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, principles and practice;
  • Knowledge of manual handling techniques;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Excellent communication and computer skills including MS Office and relevant software;
  • Good organisational skills including planning, prioritisation, time management, team work and initiative.

Desirable Criteria

  • Solid knowledge of Avid ProTools and Ableton Live as well as the care and set up of a range of musical instruments as well as a good working understanding of computers, DAWs, microphones, mixing consoles and live sound systems.
