POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Technical Manager
Reports to: Artistic Director /Company Manager
Team: Production Manager, Stage Managers, Contractors and Casuals
Responsible for: Technical management for productions (Sound, Lights, AV), tours/ extensions and building operations
Equipment maintenance
Hiring of technical crew
Purpose of the role: The Technical Manager is responsible for planning and delivery of all technical needs in this small but busy theatre. This role works closely with the Production Manager as well as contractors and casuals when necessary. Strong communication and liaison between all departments, teams and staff is required for communication, effective and efficient planning and budgeting.
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by staff in this role. Staff members may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Role Descriptions may also be modified from time to time to reflect usual growth and change of role.
Key Duties include:
• Main areas of responsibility: Sound, Lights and AV
• Liaise with and support directors, lighting/sound designers and ensure the effective delivery of the technical aspects of productions.
• Oversee purchase, hire, delivery and return of lighting and sound stock for each production.
• Maintain lighting & sound equipment in use during the run of each production.
• Sourcing of music and sound cues as requested by director.
• Provide technical advice & assistance to Stage Management during performance times.
• Provide technical specifications for proposed touring productions as requested by the Company Manager or Production Manager, in liaison with touring Production Manager / Touring Manager.
• Arrange archival filming for each production.
• Oversee the IT computer support provided by AKCS.
• Ensure there is an annual Fire Inspection, and up-to-date Fire Safety Certificate and that building alarm systems and air-conditioning units are regularly maintained in liaison with the Production Manager.
• Attend technical, dress rehearsals and previews where required.
• Advise on issues of building/venue maintenance and improvements. Where necessary obtain quotes and employ contractors in liaison with the Production Manager.
In consultation with Head of Production:
• manage and control production budgets as set by the Company Manager and Financial Controller.
• recruit select and train Production Department staff including stage managers, technical crew for each production.
• supervise technical Production Department staff including casuals and contractors.
• ensure that designs comply with licensing and health and safety regulations, that the theatre always provides a safe working environment and that the theatre’s health and safety policy and procedures are followed.
• complete a risk assessment for each production.
• maintain accurate records for each production.
• maintain props / set storage unit.
• maintain venue equipment.
• provide support and advice for outside hirers or theatre users.
– Selection Criteria
TECHNICAL:
– Tertiary Qualifications in theatre technical and production or a related field.
– At least five years experience in the Technical Management of live theatrical productions or similar.
– Broad and extensive industry knowledge and contacts.
– Experience of in-house producing and touring of live performance works.
– Proven ability to manage projects and prioritise competing demands.
– An understanding of the artistic process together with the ability to work with creatives to realise their visions.
– High-level of computer competency to oversee and support daily companies IT needs (in partnership with our IT support company) , particularly experience in using spreadsheets, word processing and technical drawing software.
– Ability to read, create and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
– Ability to keep detailed written and electronic records.
– Experience in the development, negotiation and management of contracts and agreements with a range of organisations and personnel.
– Proven ability to deliver productions on budget whilst realising artistic vision.
– Proven awareness and competency of Health & Safety in this environment.
