Technical Manager, Black Swan State Theatre Company

Black Swan State Theatre Company is seeking an experienced Technical Manager to join its Production Department.  The position is permanent.  Salary $55,000.  A detailed Position Description is below.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Technical Manager

CATEGORY: Permanent subject to three month probation period

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Ø  To assist the Production Manager in the day to day operations of Black Swan’s Production Department and the development and delivery of its theatre productions
Ø  To assist Black Swan’s contracted Lighting Designers in the coordination of all technical requirements for Black Swan productions.

DUTIES:

Ø  Assist the Production Manager in the planning and coordination of all technical requirements for productions, ensuring timely communications of requirements to venue and other staff
Ø  Assist all Production Departments in the set up and running of productions in venues, rehearsals and performance as required.
Ø  Liaise and support all Production Designers in the provision of requirements for Black Swan productions and all pre-planning thereof.
Ø  To work with and assist all Lighting Designers contracted by Black Swan in the realisation of their designs including gathering quotes for equipment hires and purchases, ordering, placing gel orders, preparing all relevant paperwork and ensuring that the venue(s) receive all information in a timely manner.
Ø  Act as re-light technician for Black Swan tours and transfers.
Ø  Be familiar with the equipment and technical assets of the Company and assist in the coordination of the safe installation and operation of such equipment at all times.
Ø  Assist in the coordination of technical requirements for one-off activities and special events as required.
Ø  Assist the Production Manager in the management of all production department related OH&S matters.
Ø  Deputise for the Production Manager as required including periods of leave.

In consultation with the Production Manager:

Ø  Determine the resource needs of productions, tours and related activities, in conjunction with creative personnel and heads of department
Ø  Be responsible for management and control of any technical budgets allocated by the Production Manager.
Ø  Assist Stage Management staff with Company events such as play readings, sponsor events and briefings.
Ø  Liaise with tour coordinators, touring venue and relevant Black Swan staff to ensure accurate and timely information is issued.
Ø  Provide all venue technical information to designers in a timely manner which allows them to redraw productions as required.

ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports To: Production Manager.
Supervises: Casual and short-term contract staff.
Internal Liaisons: Artistic Director, Directors, Designers, Production and Artistic staff, all other internal departments.
External Liaisons: Performing arts organisations, State Theatre Centre of WA staff, other venue staff, production and staging suppliers.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Essential Criteria

¨     Demonstrated knowledge and experience of technical aspects of professional theatrical staging & in particular all aspects of stage lighting with a minimum of three (3) years experience and relevant qualifications
¨      Proven ability to manage time effectively, meet multiple deadlines & prioritise a heavy workload
¨     Good communication and relationship management skills, with the demonstrated ability to work successfully with artists and supervise a small team of casual and contract staff.
¨     Competent in use of MSWord & Excel
¨     Current full driver’s licence.

Desirable Criteria

¨     Experience with Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD and/or Lightwright.
¨     Experience in IT requirements within an office environment.
¨     Knowledge of the performing arts industry.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS

?      Willingness to work outside normal business hours during production seasons or when called upon as required. This will include evening and weekend work.
