Position Objective
The role works as part of the VO Production Team, working with the Head of Production, Production Manager and the production Creatives. The Technical Manager will be responsible for delivering all delegated technical requirements of VO productions and events to the highest artistic and technical standards. VO productions will be delivered on time and within budget, complying with EHS policy and procedures, while also successfully disseminating production information and documentation to the relevant staff and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Administration:
- Ensure all production and event activity is delivered within allocated budget.
- Regularly report on expenditure to the Head of Production.
- Acquire quotes from suppliers ensuring deliverables and work completed is consistent with Victorian Opera standards.
- Maintain accurate spending records and communicate to the Head of Production any predicted overspends.
Production Stage:
- Maintain strong relationships with Creative Teams to support the production.
- Assist with the planning, supervision, and delivery of the technical production elements e.g., Lighting not limited Sound and AV.
- When required act as Lighting programmer, floor LX and assistant to the Lighting Designer.
- As assigned by Head of Production, coordinate, supervise and assist the technical team in delivering technical elements and equipment needs for all rehearsals, productions, workshops, and events including stock and hired equipment.
- Review, maintain and update technical drawings in Vectorworks or AutoCad for the production department, as required.
- Attend production meetings, design presentations and any other meetings relating to the Company’s activities and specific rehearsals, productions, workshops, and events.
- Supervise departmental bump-ins and bump-outs, focus and plot sessions, technical rehearsals, piano dresses, stage orchestrals and previews in the absence of the Head of Production or Production Manager.
- Assist with the creation of EHS documentation relating to production activity, e.g., SWP, JSA’s and Risk Assessments.
- Ensure venue and company EHS requirements are met, and clearly communicated to staff and suppliers, and ensure appropriate training is provided.
Building Maintenance
- Maintain and assist with the upkeep of the company facilities, and technical storage areas. Such as changing light bulbs, interior and exterior, as required
- Manage and implement Victorian Opera’s Test and Tag process’ in line with electrical safety legislation.
- Facilitate and oversee service providers such as cleaners, plumbers, electricians, and general builders to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of the building.
Other
- Maintain a register for technical equipment and any other equipment sourced for productions, recording the contact details, and ensuring hired or borrowed items are returned at the completion of use.
- When required assist in the in-house filming, editing of online content.
- Maintain accurate records, in a timely and efficient manner.
- Any other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time.
Qualifications, skills, and experience required
- Relevant qualifications in theatre technologies, rigging, lighting, sound and AV.
- Experience in a similar role.
- A team player who is self-motivated and shows initiative
- Enthusiasm for, and experience with, the creative sector.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders (internal and external).
- Attention to detail, organised and the ability to work on a number of productions simultaneously.
- Proficient in MS Office and familiar with Vectorworks/AutoCad.
- Familiar with Lightwrite and Qlab.
