Monash Uni Student Theatre (MUST), a department of the Monash Student Association, is seeking a Technical Manager with excellent communication skills to support the creation of high-quality, innovative and diverse performance projects, mentoring artistic leaders of the future in all aspects of technical and backstage work.

Come work with us and help create transformative experiences for our wide community!

Overview of organisation

Monash Student Association (MSA) is a student organisation, run by students and staff for students. It provides support and opportunities to over 40,000 students on the Monash students at Monash Clayton. Established in 1961, MSA has a proud history of serving the University Clayton campus.

MSA is the focal point of campus life and the peak representative body for undergraduates protecting all students’ interests.  MSA employs professional staff who work in a variety of roles and along with the elected student officials create valuable services to the students on Clayton campus.

One of MSA’s services is Monash Uni Student Theatre (MUST).  MUST creates vibrant, innovative theatre by and with Monash students for everybody. Their works are diverse, ranging from new text-based and devised pieces to bold adaptations; from large-scale immersive work to intimate experiments, events, festivals and exhibitions.

Nearly all roles on and off stage are performed by students, with necessary training and mentorship provided by the MUST Artistic Director, Technical Manager and experienced students.  Emerging artists actively shape the annual program and growing culture at MUST.

MUST Technical Manager role

The role’s primary purposes are to provide high quality technical management and support.

You will work with the MUST Artistic Director, other staff and volunteers in planning the annual MUST artistic program and provide organisational, technical and construction advice and support to each of the productions, directly training students whilst keeping a focus on safety.

You’ll be an excellent communicator, with flexibility and creative problem-solving skills, who has experience working with emerging makers and a genuine interest in their development. Towards the goal of high-quality performance outcomes, you will encourage best practice, and the use of innovative approaches, forms and technologies in productions.

 The successful applicant will require:

  • Relevant experience and working knowledge of all aspects of theatre production, including lighting and sound design, upkeep of equipment, and basic carpentry skills
  • The ability to write funding applications for projects such as capital works grants from Monash University
  • Organisational skills to coordinate the maintenance of MUST spaces and equipment, and necessary upgrades

The role is full time and will be paid at $94,347.  Overtime will be compensated by Time off in Lieu (TOIL).
