ABOUT THE ROLE
The Technical Manager will develop, manage, and implement Carriageworks technical operations, providing technical expertise and support to users, hirers and artists and is responsible for the efficient, safe, and economical use of resources and staff, within existing legislation.
Includes cost effective planning, working collaboratively with artists, co-presenters and commercial clients whilst providing leadership and strong management of the technical delivery.
The Technical Manager will have high level technical management skills including a wide range of technical and practical skills across complex theatrical techniques including lighting, audio, and visual systems. The Technical Manager will be a good communicator, a creative and practical problem solver, have a keen attention to detail and exceptionally high standards of delivery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and implement Carriageworks standard technical operating procedures as they relate to safety, legislation and best practice including technical operating policies and procedures to ensure that Carriageworks operates safely, efficiently, and with high production standards.
- Plan and manage all aspects of Carriageworks technical operation by developing and maintaining a detailed inventory of all Carriageworks’ rigging, lighting, sound, vision, staging, plant equipment, tools, power distribution and signal distribution infrastructure across the Carriageworks precinct.
- Provide technical advice and practical support across lighting, audio, vision, staging, and specialised requirements necessary for all program, production and commercial activity including opening nights, launches, meetings, training seminars, workshops, donor events, dinners, developments, artist talks, and performances. Provide technical information as required, and review production plans to ensure their technical feasibility, suitability, and safety.
- Ensure that all technical equipment is maintained in good working order, regularly serviced and that replacement equipment and stock control is well managed.
- Advise producers, production managers, lighting, and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for performances, exhibitions, and events; supervise the implementations of approved technical designs; manage the provision of Carriageworks’ technical and event equipment and plant to both program and commercial productions.
- Capacity to design lighting and technical systems (such as rigging, vision, lighting, and audio systems) for exhibitions, live productions and events and manage the implementation of these designs.
- Plan and manage all aspects of the venue’s technical operation within the technical operations budget. Make recommendations to leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
- Maximise revenue through the provision of staff, services, and equipment to Carriageworks producers and Production Managers and third-party users; monitor and review income and expenditure from these sources; and ensure effective communication with and accountability to purchasers.
- Lead and develop Carriageworks’ technical team and engender a solution-focused working culture; lead the recruitment and training of technical staff; provide direction, supervision, and technical support to Carriageworks’ technicians working on diverse projects across all areas of Carriageworks’ activity.
- Ensure that the organisational values of excellence, collaboration and respect are met and work with an awareness of, and a commitment to all Workplace Health and Safety policies, procedures, and work practices.
