Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s Technical Manager must be a dedicated, highly organised, can-do and team oriented person. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative and have the ability to work independently. Professional experience and advanced knowledge of theatre technical equipment are essential.
Our company is the resident and managing theatre, company at the Eternity Playhouse in Darlinghurst, a state of the art 200-seat theatre. At the Eternity Playhouse we have developed a unique and highly collaborative model of theatre company- one whereby professional artists can pitch their production idea to us and we produce it from concept to stage- including funding the production and paying artists. Darlinghurst Theatre Company (DTC) produces five new major professional theatre productions a year. Our venue is a vibrant creative hub and between productions we also present co-productions and other live performances and events including music, cabaret and dance.
Working closely with the Production Manager, the Technical Manager is a vital team member that helps to realise the creative vision for DTC’s productions to make new and vibrant work. Work on productions includes; assisting the Production Manager and Creative Producer to realise production lighting, sound and production designs. The Technical Manager will undertake production bump ins including the installation and set-up of all technical equipment, the supervision of casual technical crew and other contractors and undertake bump outs for productions.
DTC also works in association with other theatre producers to present and stage productions and one off performances at the Eternity Playhouse. DTC also hosts other events including topical forums for other arts organisations, not for profits and community organisations. The company also hosts corporate events. The Technical Manager is responsible for the installation, management and operations of technical equipment for events and performances; liaising with clients with regards to technical aspects prior during events and performances; and ensuring that technical requirements for events are realised. Based on experience and should there be interest in doing so- there is opportunity for the Technical Manager to undertake lighting designs for some of DTC’s extra events and performances.
The Technical Manager is also responsible for the general technical management and up keep of the venue including; the management of equipment servicing and compliance; the implementation of DTC’s WH&S policy; and the management and implementation of public venue compliance.
The Technical Manager reports to DTC’s Creative Producer and Production Manager.
Selection Criteria:
– Professional technical and operation skills applicable to a live performance venue.
– Proven experience in communication and liaison skills with staff, clients and stakeholders.
– The ability to interpret and understand theatrical plans and technical specifications.
– The ability to organise materials and equipment in an efficient and effective manner.
– Demonstrates a high level of responsibility for work undertaken including conducting basic quality checks.
– An understanding of rigging, use of tools and equipment, including safe working at heights procedures and WH&S practices.
– Advanced computer skills- including AV programs such as PowerPoint, Q Lab and others.
– Demonstrated skills in operation, maintenance, set up and control of lighting equipment and automated lighting systems including power and data distribution, communication management and console / fixture programming.
– Demonstrated skills in operation, maintenance, set up of Audio Visual equipment and knowledge of projection and display equipment, protocol, format and data management.
– Demonstrated skills in operation, maintenance, set up of sound systems including radio microphones and playback including experience in the operation of digital audio consoles.
– Ability to operate lifting equipment incidental to employees’ work.
– Ability to manage casual staff and subcontractors to deliver both outside events and the mainstage season.
– Ability to maintain theatre equipment and provide documentation of technical inventory.
Wage and Conditions
Full time: 38 hours per week. Flexibility of work hours required.
$60,000 plus super, annual leave and time in lieu.
