The Technical and Venue Manager is responsible for the operations of Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s performances and other activities, and management of the Grainger Studio premises. The person in this hands-on role manages the planning and delivery of all technical elements of our concerts and offerings, ensuring superior sound, lighting and professional staging that enhances our concert-giving experience. This role works closely with musicians, external suppliers, prospective venue hirers, property management and the wider Adelaide Symphony Orchestra team to deliver high quality events. This role requires a proactive, dynamic, positive and highly motivated person, with the ability to lead a small team responsible for all of the day to day operations of the Orchestra at a consistently high standard.
In addition to the required technical expertise, this is a diverse management role with orchestral operations duties including rostering, budgeting, managing production expenditure WH&S risk assessments, and overall coordination of all technical and logistical requirements for programs. The role will also be responsible for maintaining the Grainger Studio premises, including security, WH&S compliance and safety and act as client liaison for external hirers. The role will undertake duty management responsibilities for rehearsals and performances, with hours of work varied to accommodate evening and weekend performances.
This role requires previous experience with venue management, orchestral production and expertise in technical theatre. Excellent time management, attention to detail and problem-solving skills are essential, as is the need to make decisions confidently and quickly. The ability to take initiative across a broad range of tasks and work collaboratively is essential.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
This role works closely with the orchestra management, artistic and commercial planning staff, senior management, musicians, suppliers and venue personnel to ensure all technical and production requirements are provided at the highest level. The role will also communicate directly with the property management group, and external contractors to ensure that maintenance and repairs to the Grainger Studio premises are done to the required standard.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Production Management:
- Liaise with potential and actual presentation partners e.g. Adelaide Festival Centre, Country Arts SA and State Opera of South Australia on technical aspects of performances.
- Engage casual production staff subject to budget considerations when required
- Approve and sign off on external venue event schedules, quotes and invoices
- Ensure appropriate equipment (to include all sound, lighting, audio visual and staging) is identified and sourced within budget.
- Coordinate operational and logistical requirements for ASO concerts
- Act as stage/duty manager for all required events in conjunction with Production Coordinator, in order to ensure smooth delivery of all orchestral technical, production and performance requirements.
- Oversee and coordinate technical and production requirements for regional, interstate and international touring, including touring with the orchestra as required.
- Compile rigorous WH&S risk assessments for ASO concerts when required.
- Liaise with the Orchestra Manager to roster and supervise the Production Department to ensure adequate coverage for concert duties and Grainger venue requirements.
- Prepare financial information as necessary, to ensure the technical and production aspects of concerts are appropriately budgeted, and operate within approved budgets.
- Assist with incident management in conjunction with relevant staff
- Chair and/or attend meetings as required, such as WH&S Committee, Management Committee, Project Delivery Team and Season Design.
- Any other duties, commensurate to the role that may be required from time to time at the direction ofyour manager.
Grainger Studio Venue Management:
- Be the first point of call for Grainger Studio callouts including; but not limited to- Security, Fire and Safety
- Share joint responsibility as the position of Chief Fire Warden with Customer Service Manager
- Be responsible for Grainger Studio security including; but not limited to – allocation of swipe cards, keys, carpark passes & the maintenance of accurate records
- Be the key contact between ASO and property agents for the landlord to ensure repairs and maintenance are done in a timely manner.
- Ensure maintenance of the premises, including plant & equipment, is upheld to a high standard
- Act as client liaison for hirers of Grainger Studio, coordinating requirements and servicing needs in a professional manner
- Hire and roster casual staff for venue duties, as required for Grainger Studio
- Ensure the ASO and Grainger Studio complies with work health and safety requirements.
- Any other duties, commensurate to the role that may be required from time to time at the direction of the Managing Director.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- There is a requirement to be on-call in order to deal with emergencies and call-outs.
- Ability to work flexible working hours including weekends, early mornings and evenings.
- Intra, interstate and international travel may be required.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Significant experience within an arts company, specifically in technical theatre (lighting, sound, production/stage management)
- Experience in producing detailed budgets and schedules
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively liaise with a variety of stakeholders and to solve problems constructively and sensitively.
- Superior administrative skills with a high degree of drive, forward planning, initiative, and the capacity to deal with multiple and often conflicting priorities
- Strong organisational skills, with excellent time management skills and high level of attention to detail, including the ability to coordinate and deliver simultaneous projects
- Excellent IT skills, including proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products
- A positive, hands-on attitude, and the ability to effectively work both independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated behaviours which contribute positively to the team and culture of the ASO
- Current C Class driver’s license
Desirable:
- Experience of working within the administration of a professional orchestra
- Experience with Vectorworks or similar 3D design software
- Experience using orchestral management software (OPAS, Arts Vision, Impresario)
- Musical training and expertise
- Prior event management experience
- Relevant certifications, including: Elevated working platform license, First Aid certificate
- Fire Warden certificate
