Staging Supervisor

The position ensures the efficient operation of NIDA’s theatre staging staff and resources to support its educational and commercial activities. It requires a highly organized technician with leadership skills, knowledge of theatre staging equipment, and a commitment to supporting NIDA’s teaching environment. The role involves a 76-hour fortnight, scheduled as needed based on venue requirements.

About You

Essential: 

  • Experience in staging in a similar role in a producing performing arts company or theatres complex.
  • Expert knowledge of staging technology and systems for live performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in specifying, installing, and operating complex staging systems including revolves, elevators, tracks, automated, single, and double purchase fly systems. 
  • Computer skills including Vector Works or CAD and O365 suite.
  • Proven ability to take responsibility, work independently and exercise initiative to prioritise several tasks at once to adhere to tight schedules.
  • Experience in managing a crew for day-to-day repair, maintenance, and operation of staging equipment.
  • Experience in installation of scaffolding, set braces and other temporary structures commonly found in a performing art context.
  • Licence to perform rigging at an intermediate level.
  • A willingness to take a hands?on approach where necessary.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Proven communication experience with multiple competing stake holders in a diverse organization of Staff, Students, Artistic Professionals, Clients, and contractors.
  • A high level of understanding of Work Health and Safety legislation and procedures as related to the theatre and entertainment industries with proven experience of implementing these requirements in a sympathetic manner.
  • Has a working with Working with Children Check or ability to show a valid check prior to starting. 
  • Australian Resident or hold a current, appropriate working visa.


Desirable:

  • Experience in a not for profit and/or government or educational environment.
  • Have or be prepared to attain Working at Height.
  • Licence to perform rigging at an advanced level.
  • Hold a current first aid certificate.
  • Forklift licence.
  • Lived experience of social and cultural exclusion, and/or deep understanding of the experiences of marginalised people encountered in the learning and/or working environment.

About the role

This is a full-time 2-year contract. The base annual salary depends on experience and rigging qualifications + 11.5% Superannuation, based on a 5-day working week.

Please note

  • You are required to have the right to live and work in Australia to apply for this role.  This role is not suited to a working holiday visa holder.
  • A valid Working with Children Check for NSW is essential.  Having one or being willing to get one and to support and implement NIDA’s Child Safe Strategies is necessary to undertake this role.
