Stage Mechanist

Opera Australia (OA) is Australia’s national opera company dedicated to enriching Australia’s cultural life with exceptional opera and musical productions. About the role

The Stage Mechanist will carry out duties relating to the construct and operations of staging elements. This position is integral to the smooth running of the performance and works closely with the other departments and the Senior Mechanist Supervisor.

Key areas of focus:

  • Work as part of a team to build, set, strike and changeover opera sets
  • Carry out scene changes during performances
  • Operate mechanical components of the stage including traps, revolves, trucks, lifting equipment and movable scenery subject to training and supervision
  • Independently follow show running plots
  • Carry out maintenance and repairs of stage scenery
  • Prepare and carry out scenic cues during performances
  • Understanding of stage plan and elevation interpretation
  • Prepare and carry out scenic cues during performances
  • Notate and register scenery plots
  • Assist in the Marking out of stage scenery positions
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of scenery from trucks
  • Carry out cross-checks to ensure shows have been set up correctly
  • Carry out safety checks on scenery once it has been assembled
  • Able to use a hand tools and basic power tools as required to build and assemble Scenery

Our ideal candidate will have

  • Demonstrated experience working as a Mechanist or equivalent for a minimum of 1 year
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills, written and verbal
  • Demonstrate ability to work with creative and technical personnel and performers
  • Ability to work under pressure, using tact, diplomacy and flexibility
  • Knowledge and understanding of safe work practices.
  • Capable to carry out manual handling tasks and comfortable working at heights
  • Practical knowledge on the operation of various stage machinery and construction hand tools
  • An understanding of the requirements in venue and daily maintenance of theatres or festival sites
  • Forklift Licence

The successful Stage Mechanist must be available to work with us from 14/06/2022 until 31/07/2022.
