ShowPRO Lights the NOX Night Sculpture Walk

Held in May NOX is a night sculpture walk around the Randwick Environment Park. Students from UNSW Art & Design transform the park and wetland into an illuminated outdoor art gallery.

NOX features a 1.5km loop walk with illuminated sculptures and artworks, NOX Night Cinema, featuring short films and animations from UNSW School of Arts and Media, food trucks, Gelato Messina and a bar featuring spirits from Archie Rose distillery as well as a selection of beer and wine.

This year EventSound provided an extensive array of outdoor feature lighting for the main areas of Randwick Environmental Park which served as the Start and Finish for the Sculpture walk with exhibits by UNSW Art & Design. They also provided safety lighting around the site and through the bush walkway to the start of the sculpture walk.

“We were all so happy to get any outdoor event off the ground after a very diminished working year due to Covid!” commented Keith Clarkson, managing director of EventSound. “It was dubious that the event would even happen this year but we got the green light to put it all together with about one week’s notice. That’s where we are now with everything, it’s all last minute for final engagement as no one wants to commit in advance.”

For this event, EventSound leaned heavily on their inventory of IP-rated lighting and other fixtures from Show Technology to illuminate the park and surrounding areas.

Upon entering the site visitors followed the pathway through an alley of ShowPRO Dreamfest IP-rated LED festooning.

“We had 300m of Dreamfest festooning strung up throughout the site,” added Keith. “The programmed colour fades of the Dreamfest gave for a much more dynamic look in line with the overall colourful lighting event theme over the option of traditional static light festoon. Of course, being LED it was also a more energy-efficient option.”

Around the site perimeter and tree line, a combination of ShowPRO Brix FC and ShowPRO ColorDoQ outdoor wash fixtures were situated.

“The Brix FC has been great for us as a multipurpose fixture,” commented Keith. “We replaced some older IP fixtures with these a couple of years ago and the added flexibility of them being more than just an outdoor wash light has seen them in use on stages as 4-way pixel controllable blinders/stage wash lights, but on this occasion, they were used as a high power outdoor wash and they did a great job.”

Keith added that the ColorDoQ IP battery outdoor wash lights have become a firm favourite in their inventory as they have as much output as a cabled wash light but with the flexibility of the battery.

“We can put them wherever we need to and this is a great asset for this event which avoids us having to run cables and cable trays throughout the site to reach the areas that we want to light,” he said.

Around the site was a series of vertical Tri-Truss with custom LED “neon style” signage highlighting the differed areas and these were all up-lit with colour washes from ShowPRO Truss Mate 2, another inventory firm favourite battery LED light.

The stage, used for nightly entertainment from some great bands and DJs, was lit by ShowPRO LED PAR Quad-12 fixtures programmed with sequences for the stage and dancefloor area on the grass in front. More ShowPRO LED PAR Quad-12 fixtures were located around the site to highlight stairways and pathways for safety and also as feature uplights on the workshops classroom building.

“It was a busy high attendance event and we had to adhere strictly to Covid restrictions,” said Keith. “All access points to the site had to be manned by security as the site reached capacity many times. Each of these remote areas was supplied with several battery lights from the DotQ range by Prolights. These IP-rated ultra-compact fixtures offered enough light in a manageable package for the teams to carry to their remote locations each night.”

Keith reported that overall it was a great community event and he had many comments on how great the park looked with the colour washes throughout the site plus the vibe from the stage was fantastic.
