ShowPRO and MA Fit for 1R Gym

Offering what it says is “a new world of fitness”, 1R has launched its first boutique gym in Australia at the new Capitol Grand building in Melbourne’s South Yarra.

Founded in 2015, 1R opened its first flagship club in London by James Balfour (son of Mike Balfour, Fitness First founder) seeking to disrupt existing gym models.

With a futuristic look and feel and located over two levels, the group’s first Australian gym provides three unique training concept methods – Reshape, Rumble and Reformer – over 800 metre² of floor space. Each class runs for 45 minutes and is a high intensity, gruelling workout that is perfectly timed to the beat of the music curated and compiled by local DJs.

Of course, music needs lighting and the all-important audiovisual elements for 1R were designed and installed by Avivo Technology headed up by Peter Ivanoski.

The Rumble room was a new concept but the client knew that they wanted some sort of colour changing strip lighting. However, they were not sure how to achieve the desired result so Peter took them to Show Technology’s Melbourne office.

“Together with Branden Butler and Paul Nicolaou, we decided upon the ShowPRO DreamPIX Strips,” remarked Peter. “The strips provided the required movement, colour and brightness to the room plus with the ability to upload video content they were the perfect choice. Our client loves the video dynamic they bring to the room.”

With versatile mounting options, the DreamPIX Strip brings your ideas to light with a pixel mappable surface powered by an easy-to-use ArtNet interface that works flawlessly with popular industry-standard pixel mapping tools. A total of forty DreamPIX Strips were installed into the Rumble room situated up the wall, two on each end, and eight along the ceiling.

The Reshape and Reformer rooms had lighting briefs from the UK with the Reshape room utilising nine ShowPRO Pluto 800 wash moving head and 20 x ShowPRO PixPars, not forgetting one ShowPRO LED Fresnel 50 to highlight the instructor!

The Pluto 800 wash moving head has three 40W RGBW LEDs that can be individually controlled. With its’ incredible zoom range of 4.5°-36°, creating tight beams or wide wash effects, it was an inspired choice for this project.

“The Pluto 800s are great and work a treat,” commented Peter. “We have low ceilings throughout the Reshape studio which we thought maybe a bit challenging so the compact size of them has been very beneficial.”

The PixPars also come in a compact housing and can deliver a powerful tight beam or a super flat wash thanks to their DMX controlled motorised zoom. The room is long and narrow with twenty stations onto which the PixPars shine whilst the Pluto 800s happily do their thing depending on the accompanying music track.

A further 19 x ShowPRO PixPars are installed into the Reformer studio where there are two rows of Reformer beds that required illuminating. However, the client was so happy with the ShowPRO DreamPIX Strips they are currently arranging for twenty more to be added to the Reformer Studio.

Control is by an MA Lighting grandMA3 onPC 2Port Node integrated into a Q-SYS Core integrated audio, and control system. Operation is via an iPad Pro with presets and recalls programmed from  Q-SYS to the MA.  Essentially, it’s two-way communication so when you move the faders up and down on the Q-SYS /iPad, it relays that back in real-time to the MA.

“The help and service from Show Technology has been fantastic,” concluded Peter. “Branden has been there for us from the beginning all the way through to the end of the project and continuing. Nothing was too much trouble for him, it is a pleasure to deal with true professionals.”
