About the Role

We are seeking applications for the full time role of Senior Technician – Lighting. This is an essential role supporting functions of the Lighting Department within the Production Services Unit to provide hands-on professional, client-focused services to venue hirers and other QPAC Units. This position reports to the Manager – Lighting & Electrical Services. 

The hours of work will be primarily theatre-based with some maintenance and office work. Availability will be required for day, evening and weekend hours and for extended periods to service hirers’ schedules.

In this role you will:

  • Provide the highest level of customer service to internal and external clients.
  • Lead and participate in the bump-in, set-up, operation and bump-out of stage lighting and electrical equipment within theatres and associated venues.
  • Interpret clients’ lighting designs, technical requirements and specifications and supervise the provision of appropriate human and physical resources for events and venues in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Set up, operate and maintain lighting/electrical equipment, control systems and data networks in a live theatre environment to the highest standards.
  • Provide on-call technical support for lighting and electrical systems used in venues for set-ups, rehearsals and performances in a high-pressure, hands-on team environment.
  • Coordinate maintenance of lighting/electrical equipment and systems in accordance with maintenance schedules.
  • Assist Lighting, Production Services and QPAC staff, and staff from visiting companies, in relation to their technical requirements, to ensure the provision of fully operable and maintained lighting/electrical equipment and systems.
  • Assist with the development and presentation of training programs.
  • Contribute to the Trust’s change management programs and equitable and safe work practices.


About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for:

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret stage lighting designs, technical requirements, and specifications; and to install, operate and maintain lighting and electrical systems and equipment used in a live theatre environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise large numbers of employees in a hands-on team environment in multiple venues and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to find, analyse and rectify faults under pressure and in tight time frames.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people and with a flexible, open-minded approach to change in high-pressure situations.


Tertiary qualification in technical theatre production or related discipline or equivalent experience deemed appropriate.

Qualification within an appropriate technical systems and support discipline (desirable but not essential – e.g. electrical trade qualification, associate diploma in electronics, or similar).

Experience in programming and operating ETC EOS and MA Lighting Consoles including multi-parameter lighting fixtures, LED and moving light rigs is essential.

A familiarity with Grand MA consoles is desirable
