Review: SGM G-Profile Turbo

Mike Wood takes the weatherproof, automated LED luminaire for a trial run . . .

It’s been quite a few years since I looked at an SGM fixture, and a lot has changed. SGM was originally an Italian company but it’s now based in Denmark, and all products are designed and manufactured there under the auspices of Peter Johansen, the prior founder of Martin Professional. SGM has also recognised – and striven to fill – a specific niche in the automated lighting market:
weather-resistant units designed for use outdoors. These days, all new products that SGM produces are rated either IP65 or IP66 and aimed at outdoor use.

This is an interesting direction for the company to take. On the one hand the market for IP65 automated lighting isn’t that large at the moment (although I’m sure SGM is trying to change that), but on the other hand, SGM is one of the very few manufacturers addressing it. This gives it a niche position in an ever increasingly standardised world. Additionally, the sealed unit and protection against dust also offers protection against theatrical fog and dirt in indoor permanent installations.

This month, I’m looking at the SGM G-Profile Turbo, one of the SGM G-Series of LED-based automated lights. As always, I’ll work through from light source to output, measuring everything possible and giving you the results in a way that I hope allows you to judge the suitability of the unit for your own use.
