Review: Netron Data Distribution

By James Simpson

I don’t know what it is about a rack full of control gear, but it really gets me excited. Networking and signal management aren’t particularly sexy subjects, but it has become essential for nearly every technical discipline in today’s theatres and venues.

Netron is a sub-brand of Elation Professional and its Obsidian control brand, and its diverse product line has created a solution that makes networking fun, easy to operate and completely interchangeable with any other product. They cater for all scales and budgets with a variety of options that can take you from school hall to major tours.

To get under the hood of its range, I hosted Obsidian’s product specialist, Edward Smith, at Copper Candle HQ for a demonstration of its Netron Splitters, EtherDMX nodes, and network switches. We wanted to test how well these devices handled real conditions – live sACN and Art-Net traffic, merging between different consoles, and dealing with hardware misbehaving. The goal was to explore Netron’s ability to act as both its own ecosystem, and as part of a larger system with products from various manufacturers. This article walks through what we tested, how Netron handles sACN, IGMP, Art-Net etiquette, Art-RDM support, cue overrides, and might just make your next rig more resilient . . .
