There’s no shortage of copy fixtures in the entertainment lighting world, so it’s refreshing to see one that stands alone. High End Systems’ new SolaPix Fan 8 blurs the lines between a moving yoke fixture, an effects light, and a colour wash with tunable white light. Unlike most moving head fixtures, this one has a wide yolk to accommodate the rectangular shaped head, and the eight lenses fanned out across its arced face. When the house lights go down and the fixture comes up, it looks almost like eight aircraft landing lights with tight 4.5º beams splayed across a 60º angle. As it goes through its paces, one minute you see a range of chases and effects with vibrant colours, fast movement, continuous pan, and 207º of tilt, and the next, it frosts out to a uniform colour wash that cuts a swath about 102º by 60º. The yoke can pan 360º in about 1.3 seconds and tilt 180º in about 2.7 seconds.
