If you’re in the market for a profile fixture with colour-changing capabilities – and who isn’t at some point in time? – there are a number of options. But not all of them have an integral manual zoom, framing shutters and a rotating barrel. One that does is the Elation KL Profile FC.
The zoom ranges from a very narrow 6° to a wide 50°. Since it’s built-in, there’s no swapping of lenses or extra inventory to stash away in the precious nooks of your theatre or warehouse. I’m very used to swapping lenses with fixed beam angle to get a long throw, and 5° or 10° lenses are normally very large and bulky, and challenging to deal with. This entire fixture is 638mm long (25”) and weighs 15.9kg (35lbs). It’s not exactly petite but it’s small compared to a profile fixture with a very narrow fixed lens.
There are a lot of other nice features in this fixture, some of which lean more towards theatrical applications, like the built-in gobo rotator, and others, like the green/magenta balance and DMX controllable LED refresh rate (PWM frequency), that lean more towards studio applications. And others, like the built-in wireless DMX, make it a handy tool on both a theatrical stage and in the studio.
