Sometimes I review small fixtures that I can easily pluck from their roadcase cocoons and whisk onto my test bench with scarcely a grunt; other times, I investigate large fixtures that need me to summon
assistance as I strain to heave them out. This issue’s subject is one of the latter, but with good reason – it’s a profile unit with an extreme narrow angle
lens designed for long throws. That means large lenses, which bring significant size and weight.
Here, I’m looking at the Ayrton Huracán LT. Ayrton states this is the first product in a new range of long-throw units, hence the ‘LT’ at the end. What’s interesting is that when LED light sources first appeared, they weren’t small enough to efficiently be used with ultra-narrow lenses. However, as technology has advanced and the sources have got smaller, we are seeing LEDs in every type of theatrical luminaire, including followspots which were perhaps the last bastion of discharge lamps. The Huracán LT is a natural extension of that development.
