Working with media in the entertainment industry has transformed from a niche practice into a core component of live production. It became a specialist skill and technology that everyone wanted in their productions, but required a new type of professional who understood the combination of broadcast and video technology as well as the live events production needs and pressures. Today, media servers are central to concerts, theatres, corporate events and projection mapping installations, serving as the backbone for synchronised multi-output playback and real-time effects.
AV Stumpfl’s Pixera has entered the market in the face of some heavy incumbents already established in the minds of professionals, so it has to make its place and differentiate its product from the usual suspects. It is not trying to reinvent the wheel so much as redesign it from the ground up. Historically, media servers came bundled or tightly coupled with dedicated hardware, leaving users with limited flexibility and high recurring costs. Pixera is trying to offer a more flexible solution with a system that offers software dongles for entry-level users and full rack-mounted servers for higher-end projects.
