PURPOSE
Sydney Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with Sydney Youth Orchestras and the Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums (ANSWRC), is offering two Production Traineeship positions. Trainees will participate in on-the-job training, gaining skills for delivering a diverse range of orchestra projects including mainstage concerts, outdoor performances, orchestra camps, recordings and broadcasts, auditions, tours and digital content production. Trainees will work with professional musicians, as well as young and emerging musicians in a variety of venues across Sydney and regional NSW. The Traineeships will be for a 12-month period with an average of 20 hours’ work per week. This opportunity is part of a Creative Australia workforce development initiative and is designed to attract candidates who are curious about a career in Production.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Sydney Symphony will engage the Trainees to work on programs led by our Chief Conductor, Simone Young, and Principal Guest Conductor, Donald Runnicles, as well as ‘Sydney Symphony Presents’ programs, regional tours, chamber music programs, and auditions. Trainees will have the opportunity to shadow specialist technicians (sound, lighting, staging, stage management, eg) at the Sydney Opera House to develop their overall Production knowledge. They will work closely with SSO Operations, Orchestra Management and Artistic Planning staff to understand how the work of the various departments integrates to deliver high-standard rehearsals and performances week in, week out. Trainees will also have the opportunity to work with ground-breaking sound monitoring technology and will gain extensive knowledge of orchestral musicians’ hearing preservation and other critical workplace health and safety considerations.
Sydney Youth Orchestras and ANSWRC will engage the Trainees to work on projects for young and emerging musicians, students, and community members, both in Sydney and in regional locations. Projects will include mainstage performances, youth orchestral camps, day camps, the “Big Busk,” outdoor festivals, and modules with the Regional Youth Orchestra. Working with young musicians and community members requires a different approach and skillset, for which SYO and the ANSWRC are uniquely positioned to train young production personnel.
