Production Manager

The National Theatre in St Kilda is run by a team of people who are passionate about where they work and the work that they do.  Our organisation comprises an 800-seat venue, a 50-seat ‘black-box’ venue, and two schools (for Ballet and Drama). Our professional team includes people skilled in directing, production, technicians, venue relationship management, front of house, ticketing, finance, administration, marketing, and fundraising.

The National Theatre Melbourne has been a vital part of Melbourne’s creative landscape since the 1920s and our 101-year-old theatre welcomes a broad range of community and commercial hire groups throughout the year. We work together as a small team to achieve success throughout the year for our hirers, artists, audiences, teachers, and students.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Production Manager to join our team and play an important role at a time of change for the organisation. As Production Manager you will have responsibility for the safe delivery of all performances and events on the National Theatre Melbourne’s stages.

Leading and working as part of a small, dedicated team you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the stages environment, including managing stage technicians and working closely with the Venue Operations Manager.

You will have:

1.     Experience in production and event management.

2.     Working knowledge across the major technical disciplines of Lighting, Sound, AV and Staging.

3.     The ability to lead and manage a team, and to create a safe, respectful environment for all workers.

4.     Strong network within the theatre and event industry with key links to suppliers, technical service providers, riggers, casual crew.

5.     Capacity to identify best method approach against deadline, often with limited budget.

6.     The ability to problem-solve and make quick decisions under pressure.

7.     A solid understanding of venue operations and capabilities.

8.     Experience in preparation of production schedules, event budgets and financial forecasting.

9.     Well-developed expertise in relationship development and negotiation skills to achieve successful outcomes.

10.  The ability and passion to train staff joining the industry.

11.  A complete working knowledge of current OH&S practices in a theatrical environment and an understanding of operational capabilities and legislative and policy requirements.

12.  The ability to provide both written and verbal information clearly.

13.  A high level of computer-based skills including fluency with Microsoft Office software, and an ability to implement new software packages
