Production Manager

Performing Lines is seeking an experienced Production Manager to oversee the production and technical delivery of the company’s annual programs in NSW, Victoria and on cross-state/national projects, working closely with Performing Lines management and producing teams as well as casual project-based production and technical team members.  

The successful applicant will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, will be a motivated and energetic team-player and will be highly organised with a well-developed attention to detail. The role requires experience in technical and/or production management in the performing arts, and management of technical and/or production teams. Experience with national and international touring is highly desirable.  

The position is ideally based in Redfern (NSW), with flexible work options available, and the requirement to travel nationally and internationally from time-to-time.  The contact hours for the role are negotiable for the right applicant but would be ideally no less than 3 days per week.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Production Manager provides well-informed advice, guidance, planning and management of all matters related to production and technical delivery of the company’s annual program and operations. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Production Management  

  • organise and supervise all production and technical aspects of productions and tours including, but not limited to, scoping requirements for new and existing productions, overseeing set builds, organising technical hires, advising on suitability of proposed venues, scheduling of all production elements and co-ordination of freight. 
  • work closely with artists and PL producers to scope, cost, assess viability and plan for productions and tours, in-line with the strategy and plan for the production 
  • liaise with artists, companies, festivals, and Australian and international presenters regarding their production and technical needs in relation to productions and tours 
  • liaise with suppliers to ensure production and technical requirements of productions and tours are delivered efficiently and effectively including, but not limited to, freight agents, technical equipment companies, production workshops, etc.  
  • devise and keep current comprehensive technical specifications and production schedules for each production/tour, generate and distribute generic technical specifications and schedules to tour venues  
  • create and manage effective production budgets  
  • coordinate debriefs with project production teams on the conclusion of each production/tour 
  • attend developments, rehearsals, performances, opening nights, theatre performances and industry events as required 
  • manage all production purchases, storage and maintain Performing Lines’ equipment and technical assets, including maintenance of the production asset register

Operations 

Work with the Executive Producer, General Manager, and Senior Producers to: 

  • contribute production expertise to programming conversations to assess the viability of all potential new production projects and contribute to new project planning 
  • oversee annual production planning, resourcing and budget  
  • engage Performing Lines production and technical staff for presentations and tours, providing clear leadership for production and technical teams, ensuring all labour conditions are within LPA regulations 
  • annually review the Company’s insurance policies against confirmed programs of activities, providing advice and guidance 
  • oversee Performing Lines’ Work Health & Safety policy and implement all related policy and procedures as required for compliance.  
  • broker and maintain highly productive and successful relationships with the performing arts sector nationally and internationally including artists, artists’ companies, Festivals, regional, national and international touring presenters and agents

SKILLS REQUIRED: 

  • Work independently, exercising judgment and initiative with minimal supervision. 
  • A thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation of stage settings, rigging, scenery, and lighting, audio and video systems. 
  • Working knowledge of the Work Health & Safety Act, with specific regards to the Live Performance guidelines. 
  • Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedules and produce accurate results in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Budget management experience.  
  • Experience planning for and managing small teams.   
  • Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur. 
  • High professional standards with acute attention to detail is essential. 
  • Exceptional communication and collaborative skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and motivate people.  
  • Good working knowledge of a professional CAD software (ie Vectorworks, AutoCAD) 
  • Full drivers’ licence is essential

EDUCATION & PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE: 

Essential 

  • 5 years+ experience working as a Production Manager in a professional or independent context. 
  • Experience managing technical / production teams.  
  • WH&S and First Aid Certification. 

Desirable  

  • White Card, Forklift License, Riggers Tickets, Working with Heights Tickets etc.  
  • National and international touring experience
