Phillip Adams BalletLab (PABL) and Temperance Hall, situated in South Melbourne, is a contemporary and experimental dance organisation that creates and curates performances and festivals and programs and workshops. Temperance Hall is the home to PABL’s creative projects, as well as servicing the independent dance community as a creative hub and through the hire of its studio spaces. A champion of queer experimental performance, Temperance Hall curates programs for a number of festivals annually including Midsumma Festival and Melbourne Fringe, curates a program of talks, forums and workshops and partners with major arts festivals to present new performance works by Artistic Director Phillip Adams. Temperance Hall is also a popular venue for hire for private events and local business functions.
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The Production Manager will oversee the production management of a busy performance venue environment, providing professional services in audio, lighting, staging and AV. You will work closely with the venue’s team to deliver the technical production of projects including self-presented and curated performance seasons of experimental and contemporary dance works, industry events, creative developments, talks and forums. There is an option to increase working hours throughout these busy performance periods.
The role includes organising technical maintenance as required, upkeep and condition of the venue and technical equipment. You must have an interest in implementing and streamlining systems and procedures, and show agility in fault finding. Those with a strong backstage discipline in Lighting/AV are encouraged to apply.
Accountabilities
- Direct management of the bump in and bump out of rehearsals, performances and events ensuring the production schedule and budget are implemented as planned.
- Ensuring all internal program and external hirer’s technical requirements are considered and taken into account for event preparation and delivery.
- Negotiation and liaison with internal staff, artists and external hirers to confirm technical and scheduling requirements
- Assist artists and their creative teams to seamlessly integrate into the venue’s technical systems and ways of working
- Interpret, follow and/or create documentation such as lighting design plans, final sound and cue sheets; design and operate audio cue platforms and other technical documents and platforms
- Development and issue of production schedules and crew requirements in collaboration with the Program Producer and Venue Operations Coordinator within agreed timeframes.
- Monitoring and updating of production budgets and alerting the relevant stakeholders of any significant changes
- Ensuring that all relevant production and financial information is accurately recorded in organisation database, including maintaining asset register.
- Reconciliation of budget post event and reporting requirements
- Developing, managing and reporting on event based OH&S risk assessments, ensuring relevant stakeholders comply with risk controls and the relevant OH&S standards.
- Actively suggesting improvements to further support success of the organisations program goals and objectives.
- Actively seeking feedback on performances and programs and identifying development needs to senior management, including improvement of venue plans and operational procedures.
- Undertake post event review with project staff
- Attendance at production meetings and delivery of production specific advice and OH&S briefing and guidance with all project staff.
- Interpretation of technical specifications and provision of advice, guidance and solutions to production related matters.
- Undertaking related duties as assigned by the senior artistic and management staff.
- Experience in lighting design, rigging and operation and flexibility to increase workload for performance seasons as required
Decision Making
- Considerable autonomy is required to make decisions on day-to-day production related issues, and resolving any operational conflicts across the department.
- The position manages event and program based production budgets.
- The position uses astute judgement in managing issues and balancing any conflicting demands of internal and external stakeholders.
