The Production Coordinator undertakes staging and production activities for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra concerts, rehearsals, Fellows concerts, Vanguard concerts, philanthropy concerts and all non-concert events.
The Production Coordinator works as part of a small team to deliver all Sydney Symphony Orchestra productions and events at the highest artistic quality and technical standards, on time and within budget.
The Production Coordinator works to deliver the physical performance space and surrounding environment.
The Production Coordinator is a rostered position that involves significant weekend and evening work. The role also requires touring with the Orchestra or ensembles of the Orchestra as assigned.
Key accountabilities:
Planning
- Assist the Production Manager in the planning and staging of all Sydney Symphony Orchestra concerts, rehearsals, non-concert events and other activities.
- Assist the Production Manager to address all lighting, sound and audio-visual requirements for each Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert, non-concert event and other related activities.
- Prepare CAD drawings of stage placements, as requested
- Engage with musicians, conductors, artists, artistic planners, orchestra managers and front of house staff to integrate artistic expectations and technical requirements on stage
- Work with the SSO Librarians to coordinate the collection and distribution of musical scores for all concerts, rehearsals, non-concert events and other activities.
- Coordinate freight bookings for the transport of equipment, instruments and wardrobe boxes for local, regional, national and international rehearsals and concerts.
- Attend team, inter-departmental, and external stakeholder planning meetings.
Staging
- Set, change and strike the stage for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra concerts, non concert events and other activities.
- Assist the Stage Manager to set up noise monitoring equipment.
- Assist recording and broadcast crews to ensure stage preparations meet requirements.
Equipment & Instruments
- Ensure secure storage, maintenance and repair of the orchestra’s equipment, instruments and wardrobe boxes.
- Undertake twice yearly inventory checks of all equipment, instruments and wardrobe boxes. Complete all registers for tracking purposes.
Supervision and Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with and coordinate venue technical and production staff, as required.
- Build and leverage positive working relationships with technical and production counterparts at SSO venues, contractors, suppliers, other Orchestras, and other key stakeholders.
- Supervise casual SSO Production Assistants and Staging Assistants.
Workplace Health and Safety
- Ensure all actions on stage at each venue comply with Workplace Health & Safety requirements and safety risk assessments.
- Report all safety issues to the Production Manager.
Qualifications and Skills:
Planning & Staging
- Demonstrated successful experience in stage coordination in professional classical and/or commercial productions
- Experience in touring professional productions, advantageous
- Excellent planning and organising skills
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Time-critical problem-solving skills
Technical
- Computer literate including Microsoft Office
- Experience with CAD & data base systems (e.g. OPAS), desirable
- Good verbal and written communication skills
People
- Proven ability to work well with creative and artistic personnel
- Proven ability to work equally well in a team environment as well as independently
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
WHS
- Demonstrated successful experience in responsibility for stage and back-stage workplace health and safety issues
- Experienced in Work Health & Safety compliance in live performance
General
- A knowledge and interest in classical music
- Current NSW Driver’s licence
