Production and Technical Coordinator

Regarded as Tasmania’s premier entertainment venue, the arena has hosted concerts, conventions, exhibitions, dinners, trade shows, assemblies, sporting events, meetings and weddings to the delight of local and interstate audiences.  The Arena is home to the Tasmanian NBL team the Tasmania JackJumpers

The Tasmanian Government commissioned the then known Derwent Entertainment Centre in 1989 as a celebration of the 1988 bicentennial year.   In 2020 the venue was reverted to the Tasmanian Government and underwent a multimillion-dollar redevelopment.  In 2020 the Tasmania Government signed a management agreement with LK Stadiums which is part of the LK Group who currently manage the venue.

The Role:

The Production and Technical Coordinator is responsible for working as part of and managing the backstage team, including the set-up and breakdown of necessary equipment for each event.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Venue Manager in the day to day management of the backstage and venue work area including all areas open for hire.
  • Ensure all clients and contractors and production management are dealt with in a professional, timely and efficient manner.
  • Work with tour managers and production managers on their stage set requirements and other tasks as required.
  • Coordinate technical requirements, equipment, scheduling and staff rostering.
  • Understand and maintain compliance with all laws, codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, Risk Management, safety precautions, rules/regulations and emergency procedures are followed.
  • Investigate, analyze and resolve operational problems and complaints.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance and operation of audio/visual equipment, including sound, stage lighting and theatrical equipment, within the venue.
  • Bump in and Bump out for major productions – Induction of contractors to the venue, safety awareness, supervision of movement of equipment, storing of equipment to provide support for the lighting and sound rig.
  • Receive, dispatch, distribute, check, document and record goods materials and components.
  • Ensure all visitors and contractors are signed in to the venue prior to entering.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Minimum 12 months’ prior experience setting up and breaking down event equipment, including staging and sporting floors.
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to problem solve, manage multiple tasks and priorities, and make an informed decision independently.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in busy environments.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and application.
  • Ability to use a range of tools and equipment as required to perform the duties of the position.
  • Knowledge of backstage operations and procedures.
  • Excellent computer skills and understanding of the Microsoft suite of programs
  • Understanding of contractor induction processes and supervising contractors on site.
  • Physical capacity to complete manual labour requirements of the role.
  • White Card certification
  • Licensed to drive a forklift.
  • Licenced to work at heights.
  • Firewarden qualifications and training.
  • Current First Aid qualification including CPR.
  • Valid and current Working with Vulnerable People Check (mandatory – cannot be a volunteer check)
  • Must be flexible with hours – our events run during weekdays and weekends (day and night) and team members must have full availability (including availability for over the NBL season).
